Baby Cosplay WIP #5 || 2024

Hello everyone!

This is the second last WIP for my Baby cosplay as the final WIP will he saved for her props, as I need to make her microphone and an ice cream prop still, but after working on the cosplay itself for so long, it's nice to say that she's finally done and the next post will be me in cosplay to share how she looks when put together.

When Comic Con rolls around, I'll share the pictures that get taken of me, but until then, we'll all have to wait!

Process:

Step 1: Using cling wrap and masking tape, I made two templates of my right arm and leg, one for the lower and upper portion of each limb. I then cut the templates into either 3 or 4 pieces, depending on where the template was too curved.

Step 2: Using paper, I traced the outline of each template piece and cleaned up the design a bit, extending what needed to be extended and ensuring it all fit around my arms and legs.

Step 3: With the paper templates sorted, I decided to work on the pins that are in each limb piece, starting with cutting 8 pieces of 2.5mm thick wire and bending them into the shape I needed it to be, before using a much thinner wire to hold the base together.

Step 4: As I bent the wire, I also painted the balls that adorn each pin, putting one on each end of a pencil and adding two layers of blue paint.

Step 5: I decided to work from the bottom to the top with the limb pieces and started tracing the paper template onto some cardboard and flipping the pattern to ensure the left and right side matched. I then cut all 8 pieces, along with the knee pieces, and taped everything together.

Step 6: I then cut out the section of the template and copied it onto cardboard, cutting them out and using a glue gun to secure the s in place, and well as the circle piece in the knee cap.

Step 7: Cutting out 3 pieces of velcro for each leg piece, I secured them in place and tested to see if the leg piece held up okay when worn. Once the text was performed, I used a pencil to stab a hole through the cardboard and secured a pin in each leg using hot glue and tape.

Step 8: I then added a small piece of velcro on the knee pieces and another on the leg to help secure the knee once it's glued to the leg as it overlaps with the open part of the leg, as gluing the whole piece down will interfere with how I put the leg piece on.

Step 9: I then repeated this entire process for the rest of the limb pieces, copying the templates onto cardboard, taping the pieces together, gluing the s and velcro in place, and then stabbing a hole through the cardboard and getting the pins glued in place. The arm pieces needed some extra length, and the thighs needed a piece cut off to have it fit my leg better.

Step 10: Podge time! I hated podging the skirt, but these pieces went by really quickly. I'm still not a fan of podging the edges, but at least I finished this part a lot quicker than the skirt and torso, with those pieces taking about 3 days each -

Step 11: Next up was paint! I started with the white coat, painting each piece with at least one coat, then going back over with a second coat. Once the white was done, I moved onto an oyster grey shade of paint for the sections, which once again received two coats per limb.

Step 12: I then sprayed a clear coat of lacquer on each piece before gluing the knee caps in place.

During a leg test fit, I discovered that the thigh pieces struggle to keep themselves up and even with a sponge stuffed between the leg and the cardboard, it still slid, just not as quickly, so my next best option is to use ribbons looped over a belt to hold them up, which might be visible when I do a proper test fit!
