Why I Chose Western Over English

Hey guys! Welcome back to another post! Hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend! As you can see from the title, I’m going to be explaining why I chose to ride Western instead of English! I’d like to start this off and quickly say, I have NOTHING against English, and I’m actually considering getting into the discipline. I’m simply just going to be telling you guys why I’ll always love Western more. With that out of way, let’s get started!

Why I Chose Western Over English

I’ve grown up in the same place all my life, a little farm with some acreage in the country. So, I’ve always been a country gal, country music, rodeos, jeans and boots have always been my forte. When the opportunity to start riding lessons had come up, my parents and I both knew that Western was the way to go for the type of lifestyle that we lived. From the beginning, Western has always been my first option. It’s the discipline that just feels like me, the discipline that feels natural for a girl like me to be doing. That’s the main reason I chose it over English.

Another reason why I chose Western over English, is the the events that Western had to offer. I love a good adrenaline rush, even as a kid I craved speed. So, when I found out that Western had events like barrel racing and pole bending, I knew that those were what I wanted to do. Well, now that I actually do western games competitively, I don’t regret my decision. It’s the best feeling in the world, you and your horse flying around poles and barrels, hearing your friends and the crowd cheer as you push your horse faster to run home. It’s the best, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

Now, it’s not just the speed or the country lifestyle that made me chose Western, it’s the fancy tack and clothes. In English, everyone looks so pristine and elegant, and don’t get me wrong, they look great, but with Western, there is glitter, fringe and fun colors. It’s so fun because I get to do my whole matchy-matchy red color I do with Flicka. Also, it’s so fun to see everyone else wearing fun colors and fancy tack, and glitter on their horse’s hindquarters. It makes everything feel more like a good time rather than competition.

Well, there a few reasons why I chose Western over English! Like I said, I have nothing against English, I’m just a Western gal! Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed my post! I hope to see you next time!

Bye!

It’s funny because I chose English for the opposite reason. I always dreamed of jumping a horse (literally) and I always ired the way they were able to fly over the fences and I just ired it so much. When I finally started riding English happened to be more available in my area is well, so I got to start learning the thing I had literal dreams about and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I do hunters (always have but I just wanted to learn how to jump when I first got into it) and I love the way you don’t have to speed around the ring like you would in timed jumpers, so I kinda accidentally found myself in the perfect discipline for me that incorporated jumping

That’s great! I’m so glad that you were able to do what you wanted! Jumping seems so fun, but personally I just have no desire to jump mainly because of how damaging it can be to my horses. Hunters looks so elegant and clean, very good event to chose! Thanks for sharing, it was really cool to hear your side of things!

I agree! I don’t like higher level jumping because they can hardly prevent themselves from slamming down on the horses back and I feel like it looks really messy and like they push the horses limits. Is also known for being a bit sexist in higher levels and not caring as much about abusive practices. I do however think that smaller jumpers look nice too. I do definitely prefer hunters now that I know the difference though
