Let’s Talk Pt13: Zenyatta

Hello hello! Welcome back to Let’s Talk! Today we are going to be talking about famous racehorse Zenyatta! Let’s get into it!

Zenyatta

Zenyatta is a thoroughbred mare who was born on April 1st, 2004 in the United States. Her sire is Street Cry, her dam is Vertigineux, and her grandsire is Machiavellein. She is dark bay, her owners are Jerry & Ann Moss, her trainer was John Sherriffs and her jockey was Mike Smith.

Zenyatta is famous for her success on the racetrack. She didn’t start racing until age 3, and she won her maiden race in November, 2007. In 2008 through 2010, Zenyatta won seventeen consecutive graded stakes wins. The most famous of these races being the Breeder’s Cup Distaff and the Breeder’s Cup Classic, two of the most famous races in America.

To this day, Zenyatta is the only mare or filly to ever win the Breeder’s Cup Classic. She won it in 2009 over a colt named Gio Ponti by 3 quarters of a length, leaving horse racing fans everywhere with an unforgettable performance. Zenyatta is so impressive that she was nicknamed “The Queen.”

Zenyatta retired in 2010, after her second Breeder’s Cup Classic where she lost by only a nose to a colt named Blame. She retired with a record of 19-1-0, one of the most impressive records in American horse racing history. During her career, she received many awards, including American Champion Older Female Horse in 2008, 2009 and 2010, Horse of the Year in 2010, and the Secretariat Von Populi award in 2010. In 2016, she was inducted into horse racing Hall of Fame, and was given a life size statue at Santa Anita Park in 2012.

Zenyatta is now 18 years old, and lives at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. She is now a brood mare, but none of her foals have been successful. She is in great health, and is very happy in her retirement.
