Born and raised on the island of Ithaca, he knew about the customs of the land. Also knowing how it was to live under King Odysseus’ rule. When the King went to Troy with his men. Akakios was left behind, due to not being of age during that time to go fight a war.

When Penelope had to choose who would be the next king, after some years of Odysseus not returning home. Akakios was in his middle twenties. So he was part of the lineup of suitors that waited to hear Penelope's answer.

He had a strong build, but he wasn't a fighter, he only fought when he had to. He preferred to be the gentle giant of the group, with his height being 6 '4 ft. In his mind, if he were chosen to be king, he'd want to lead by Odysseus’ example, ruling fair and justly. Including treating Penelope as the Queen she is, not a prize to be won. This train of thought often made him clash with Antinous.

After Telemachus’ fight with Antinous. Akakios checked on him, to make sure he was alright. Even telling Telemachus that he would be there for them, if they ever needed anything. Extending that offer to Penelope as well.

After Odysseus returned to his palace, killed Antinous, and started his rampage. Akakios, now in his late twenties, helped in the fight to get rid of the other suitors. Odysseus being blind was rage was about to strike down Akakios, when Telemachus came to Akakios’ aid and vouched for him. Odysseus let Akakios live and once the fighting had stopped, Odysseus had reunited with Penelope. Odysseus made Akakios one of his royal advisors.
