The sweet scent of candy and other delicious sweets filled her nose, just as they always did when she was inside the shop. It was a pleasant smell that she didn’t think she could ever grow tired of, it made her so very happy everyday. To her, this scent was a reminder that she was exactly where she wanted to be.

She had just finished crafting a fresh batch of candies, varying in shapes of cats, dogs, bears, and even rabbits. She collected them all, adding them to the tub which she handed off to an older man for wrapping. She smiled brightly at him, offering a cheerful “thank you!” when he placed a separate tub of fully wrapped candy in her hands. She turned on her heel, practically bouncing across the kitchen and into the front of the store where the sweets were displayed.

She carried the box of candies over to one of the shelves, humming softly to herself as she placed them one-by-one into their rightful sections. It was a minute or two later, when nearly all the candies in her tub were sorted onto the shelf, that the soft bell on the door caught her attention, alerting her to someone having entered the shop.

Glancing over her shoulder, bubbly joy exploded in her chest at the sight of a young child standing there. Despite his nervous movements, his eyes were blown wide, looking around the store in awe. Kani set down the box she was holding and walked over, causing the boy to jump when he noticed her approach. She only smiled sweetly, leaning down to place her hands on her knees as she addressed the child.

”Hello there!” She greeted him, “you’re a new face! If this your first time here?” The boy nodded, shuffling backwards half a step as he stared at her, somewhat warily. Kani only smiled. “Ohhh, how exciting! It’s very nice to meet you then! Are you interested in the sweets here?” Again, the boy nodded, though she could tell from the way he stood just a little taller that she had caught his attention. She laughed softly, “alright! Since it’s your first time, would you like to try some? The candy!”

If the boy had been in awe before, he was practically sparkling with excitement now. “R-really? I can?” He asked, and it was Kani’s turn to nod. “Of course! Over here, I’ll let you pick out a candy for yourself as a special ‘welcome’ treat!” She lifted her hand, pointing over to the shelf she had been at not long before. “Um..! Okay!” The boy suddenly smiled bright and moved past her, making his way to the candy to browse.

Kani stayed where she was for a few minutes longer, watching the child with a gentle smile. She raised a hand to her hair, brushing it behind her ear and letting out a soft exhale before she followed after the young boy.

She loved everything about her job, truly, but this was definitely her favorite part.

When she finally woke and opened her eyes, the first thing she noticed was that she didn’t recognize this place at all. She lifted her head rather quickly, only to be hit by a sharp pain, dropping her head back down with a grimace. Was the world around her swaying, or was that just her own vision? It was hard to tell, groggy as she was.

How had she gotten here..? She closed her eyes, breathing slowly as she attempted to focus on the memories coming back to her through the heavy pain. She could kind of it, being suddenly ambushed when she left the sweets shop. Who had attacked her? She couldn’t seeing them properly. On the other hand…what about Mr. Akitoshi? She was supposed to only be gone a few minutes, so he must have noticed by now.

What was he thinking now? Was he looking for her? Was he alright, or is it possible he was also attacked? Why was she the target, in the first place?

After a few moments, she opened her eyes once more, glancing around the room again. No windows, one door that was out of her reach. The more she sees, the tighter her muscles become. She turns her head, resting her forehead against the floor as she tried to take deeper breaths, though it was increasingly difficult, due to her own feelings and the environment itself. She listens to the waves outside, watching the room around her sway. Was she on some sort of ship, then? How?

She lifted her head again, reaching up with the intention of rubbing her face— only to realize her hands were bound together. She freezes, eyes locked onto the rope wrapped around her wrists. Her ankle, too, is tethered to the boiler not far from her. She doesn’t try to break away. She doesn’t try to fight it. She sits there silently, entirely still save for the frantic movement of her eyes around the room, searching for something that wasn’t there. Could it have been…?

But no, that didn’t make any sense. She had no reason to do that. She wouldn’t, there wasn’t a point to that, was there? Kani had been gone for a while already, she wouldn’t suddenly want her back now. So then…then why?

She didn’t get to ponder her own questions for long when the door is slammed open, her eyes immediately flicking towards the woman who entered the room in anticipation…but it wasn’t who she thought. The woman before her was none other than Aiko Noruko, and Kani couldn’t help but relax slightly when she sees her, enough to regain control of her muscles. She pushes herself into a sitting position, looking up at the woman. She had been kidnapped right? What was she doing here?

Kani jumps slightly when Aiko snaps at her. “If you don’t want them to kill you, then you’re going to answer my fucking questions,” she says as she steps into the room. Them? Who…? Kani watches silently as she leans against the door, swallowing and giving a small nod of acceptance.

“Who the hell are you supposed to be?”

”um…” she started, shifting uncomfortably from her spot on the floor. “Kani Virtanen. The Ultimate Confectioner.” By reflex, she almost followed up with something along the lines of ‘it’s so nice to meet you!’ But she stopped herself, clamping her mouth shut. It wasn’t a very nice meeting. This was a kidnapping after all, and even she wasn’t That stupidly friendly.

“D’you know why someone as oh so highly praiiised as you ended up in this shithole?”

Kani shook her head, “I…No, I have no idea.” Why would she know something like that? She could make a vague guess as to how Aiko may have ended up here and, by association, what that means for the rest of this place…but as for why they chose to abduct Her, she came up with nothing.

“What do you think about love? They’re watching. Answer correctly.”

Kani frowned, confused. She hadn’t been expecting a question like that—though she hadn’t expected any of this at all, really. And ‘they’re watching’? Who and from where, exactly? She swallowed a second time, ignoring the urge to scan the room for some kind of camera or anywhere else someone could observe them from. She kept her eyes on Aiko as she prepared an answer in her head. “Well I…think it’s something…nice. That everyone should be able to experience…at least once.”

Aiko Noruko huffs at her, glaring with her single visible eye. “Great. They’re gonna have fun with you.” The woman tells her as she turns and begins to leave, making Kani’s frown deepen despite the relief that she feels at not being asked any other questions. Before she disappears completely outside of the room, she turns and says one last thing. “I’d wish you good luck, but you’re going to die. Don’t even waste your breath.”

Those words don’t surprise her, not really. Despite the way her shoulders tensed, she didn’t bother to try denying it. She wasn’t stupid, she knew majority of people who got kidnapped didn’t get to escape alive, but that didn’t make hearing it said out loud any nicer. After Aiko leaves her sight, someone else enters it, standing in the doorway. Who—?

Something collides with her head, and suddenly everything goes dark.
