Once upon a time, he had been in the kitchen, rolling dough with his little sister.
He ed clearly his sister’s scrunched face as she focussed on the dough at her hands, always being just a little too rough with it. The dough ripped and she pouted, then started over anyway with even more determination. Just as she always did. It was normal, but it never failed to make him smile. He set his roller down and scooted over to her, placing his hand next to hers and showing her the better way to roll the dough, just as he always did. It was a repetitive occurrence, but he didn’t mind.
It was his everyday life, and something he thought he was completely happy with. Across the counter, his mother softly hummed a song she had long forgotten the words to. That, too, had been normal. The same noise he had been listening to for nineteen years. His mother turned away from the vegetables she had been chopping, taking a moment to watch her children with a sort of warm fondness that brushed the cold off your shoulders during the winter.
He couldn’t help but study the wrinkles between her eyebrows, under her eyes, and around her mouth. She had many happy days, according to the deep laugh lines around her lips, and just as many troublesome ones, he could tell, by word of the crease between her eyebrows from them being pinched together so much. Even so, his mother remained the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.
“Mi hijo, can you take the empty box out to the trash please?” She asked him, pointing to the cardboard on the floor behind him. He responded with a kind smile and a nod “Of course, mama.” As he picked up the garbage and headed out the door, nothing had seemed unusual. Everything was normal. But after that, everything was black.
The next thing he knew, he was waking up. His eyes opened slowly, squinting as they adjusted to the sky around him. Around him? Yes, he was floating. His heart dropped, and he suddenly felt wide awake. His limbs wouldn’t move, yet he couldn’t tell if they were frozen from fear or some other reason. Where was he? Was this a dream? It felt so real…how did he get here? He couldn’t anything.
He looked around and immediately regretted it. The blank nothingness of the sky which surrounded him made him feel sick, like he would keel over at any moment, if he could move at all. His vision swayed, and he wished he could fall back into unconsciousness, hoping to wake back at his house, in his room, to find this really was a dream. But he didn’t fall asleep, and he most definitely didn’t wake. He forced himself to breathe deeply, hoping a calm mind will let him relax into sleep and, hopefully, to waking up at home.
A sound caught in his ears, and a bright light entered his vision, swirling until it was right in front of him. He squinted his eyes against it, blinking a few times to get his eyes adjusted. It–they–were stars. He couldn’t help thinking it was sort of pretty, until he saw the figure attached to them. When the figure grinned at him, he felt a deep dread seeping into his stomach. Who was this? Why was he here? Where IS here? His eyes flicked over the figure’s swirling pink hair and baggy clothing, slowly coming back to land on his face. He opened his mouth to speak, but the stranger beat him to it.
“My oh my, you woke up early!” His hand clamps against his mouth, an exaggerated gasp escaping his lips. “I wasn’t prepared…!” His tone is dragged out, clearly feigned worry with such a wide grin on his lips. “Oh well!!”
The switch in the stranger’s tone made him narrow his eyes, confusion and suspicion clear in his features. As the man glides closer, his muscles tensed, his body straining to move away and yet unable to in the empty space.
“We don’t usually get guests up here, so it’s nice to see you! I’m your local Star. Don’t let me blind you too much..! I’d hate for you to die from how bright I am!... Oh, but I have a few questions before I let you go back down, okay? If you don’t answer.. I’ll have to shoot you off to the stars for eternity!”
He shakes his head “I— no…who are you??” He finally speaks, tilting his slightly to look sideways at the figure. His vision was swimming, his senses buzzing because of the weightless yet suffocating experience, floating among the sky he never imagined he could touch.
The Star sways, back of his hand against his forehead, as he suddenly falls in the air.
He winces, watching as The Star straightens himself and bows, yet not answering his question.
Before he can say more, The Star continues.
☆ ONE ☆
“Tell me your name, age, and pronouns, little one! The stars know all, just as I do~”
Was this a dream? It had to be, even though he didn’t falling asleep…it was the only explanation he knew of for him to be floating in the middle of nowhere with a supposed “Star” asking him questions.
”uh…I’m Croc. 19, he/him. Hey– who are you? Is this a dream??”
☆ TWO ☆
“Did you get a talent from that school? Hope’s Peak? My oh my, tell me what it was!”
Yes, this must be a dream. How else would they know about him going to Hope’s Peak? He doesn’t exactly talk about it anymore, and he most definitely doesn’t know this person from anywhere.
Settling on that explanation, he lets himself relax, a confident grin making its way onto his face. He tilted his head at The Star, cocky expression worsening. “Yes, I did! You’re looking at the one and only Ultimate Rock Climber! Pretty cool, right? I bet you’re impressed.”
☆ THREE ☆
“I’m not planning to return you home.. Woe is you! Won’t you miss your home? You might not see it for awhile…”
That seemed to strike a deeper cord with him. It made him pause; was there a chance this ISN’T a dream…? That didn’t make sense, because waking up floating in the middle of the sky isn’t exactly a normal occurrence, but it still brought panic to his already buzzing brain.
”What?! No way! I GOTTA return home, dude! I can’t stay here! What the hell do you mean?? Of course I’m gonna miss it! You can’t just take me away from my life! Hey, are you even listening??”
☆ FOUR ☆
“How would you try to leave this space, little one? It’s not like I’m stopping you.. Do you have any idea how you could?”
In truth, he had no idea how he would get away. It’s not like he can move right now, and he doesn’t even know where he is or how he would get down. Even so, he glared at The Star. “Well, this is DEFINITELY a dumb dream, so all I gotta do is wake up, right? I’ll pinch myself, or something! Or– or I'll just stop believing! That’s what happens in that one story, right? If the kids stop believing they can fly, they won’t!” He didn't quite know how or why this reminded him of the Peter Pan story, but he mostly didn’t care at the moment. He just wanted to go home.
He tensed when The Star spoke again, frustrated and confused at the lack of a reaction to anything he said or did.
“Wonderful! How lovely! You answered so well,” he says, “That’s all I needed! What a wonderful show.. Stay safe, little one.”
He begins to feel fuzzy again, his vision swaying one last time to look up at the glittering stars above before the world in front of him faded away.
Goodnight.
Sweet dreams.
