BTS Beat One Direction to Claim Biggest Event-Cinema Release

Burn The Stage: The Movie, the first film from South Korean K-Pop band BTS, has broken the global event cinema record, claiming the crown from fellow boyband megastars One Direction.

According to Trafalgar Releasing, the film landed 1.4 million issions since launching on Thursday, whereas One Direction: Where We Are claimed 1.2 million issions back in 2014.

Burn The Stage: The Movie has been seen across 79 territories, with a global box office haul of an estimated $14 million.

Over the weekend it reached the number 10 box office spot in the U.S., where it averaged $5,900 per screen for a total of $3.6 million, making it the country's highest-grossing event cinema music production. In the U.K., it claimed the weekend's sixth spot with $830,000, while it also achieved more than 100,000 issions in both the Philippines and Indonesia, gained a more than $14,000 screen average in Denmark and reached $800,000 in box office in and Austria.

"BTS fans filled AMC theaters across the country," said Nikkole Denson-Randolph, AMC Theater's vp content strategy and inclusive programming. "It’s exciting to feel the audience’s ion for this documentary film, starting from the moment the cinema events were announced."
