“Blackkit, stay close to the nursery, please,” Darktail fussed, following her little kit out of the den. The thin kit fluffed her fur.

“I can be out here like every other kit. I’m big enough!” she protested.

“I think our little warrior has a point,” Aspengaze purred as he padded over and licked the top of Blackkit’s head then put his nose to Darktail’s cheek. The anxious queen physically relaxed with the touch of her mate. Blackkit watched her parents before turning again to watch Creekkit and Redkit barrel by, tumbling, playing, and batting at each other. They were younger than blackkit but already bigger. All the ThunderClan cats were big, broad, and heavy. Compared to Blackkit and her dainty WindClan mother. This kept her mother from allowing her to play with the other kits. Always being told she wasn’t big enough. Blackkit didn’t find this fair at all. She was a whole moon older! She saw no reason why she couldn’t play with them.

Her attention was pulled away as she watched a patrol return. Fireclaw, who led the way in, looked at her with a unkind gaze. He set the prey he had in his jaws down and moved along across camp. Crowpelt, Emberpaw, and Lionleap all gave her similar looks. Blackkit’s pelt prickled in discomfort and she retreated back to her parents.

“Darktail,” she said quietly, “Why do they all look at me like I’m a rat?”

Darktail looked anxious and sadly, she licked her kit’s head, “They just don’t understand that we’re all cats… that you’re ThunderClan and always will be.”

Aspengaze’s tail lashed with fury, “They’re mousebrains.”

Another voice spoke up, “I wouldn’t say that too loud, if they hear you it won’t help you,” Silverfoot padded up and sat with them. He purred at Blackkit.

“Why aren’t you playing with Redkit and Creekkit?” he asked.

“She’s too small to play with them,” Darktail responded. Silverfoot shrugged.

“She’s not unhealthy, I think she’d do great. She has some of the best warriors for parents.” he tried to ease the queen. Blackkit beamed and stood.

“Can I go play? Please, please,”

“Go along,” Aspengaze meowed. Darktail just nodded and watched Blackkit bound off to play with her denmates.Darktail still didn’t take her eyes off her kit, her tail still flicked around in worry. Silverfoot beamed at this kits and looked back to the young mother.

“Didn’t Whiteleaf say she was healthy? Just small? It comes from her windclan blood. You’re thin yourself, Darktail.”

“And the other kits are as big as any other thunderclan cat. She’s small. She could get hurt,” she responded hastily.

“Whiteleaf said she’s fine,” Aspengaze reaffirmed the deputy’s statement, “just small. She’ll get bigger and she’ll be a fine warrior.”

“I hope so…” Darktail said.

Big clouds rolled over the sky and covered up all the blue. The queens ushered their kits into the nursery as rain started pouring down. The elders moved into their dens too. Only a few warriors were out in spots that had trees draping over enough to keep them dry. With a clap of thunder a yowl ripped through the air.

“Shadowclan is attacking!”

Darktail grabbed her kit and moved to the back of the den she set her down and wrapped her tail around her. Panic bristled through Blackkit’s little body. The screaming of the fighting cats. Softspring kept her kits close to her. Both queens watched the entrance to the nursery, expecting a Shadowclan warrior to burst through at any moment. But instead the screams died down and eventually there was none. Darktail hesitated but told Blackkit to stay put and creeped over to the den entrance.

The yowls were replaced with cries from Darktail. The queen ran out of the nursery completely. Blackkit panicked and ran to follow. Softspring tried to stop her but Blackkit slipped out before she could. Darktail was towards the middle of the camp, laying over a limp body Blackkit didn’t initially recognize. Whiteleaf quickly made her way to the body and grieving queen. Soon it clicked and she realized who the tabby pelt belonged to, her father. Before she could run to them she was grabbed up by her scruff and taken into the nursery again. The kit cried and squirmed. She was set down and a big grey paw kept her from going anywhere. She looked up to see Silverfoot. The deputy had some smeared blood on his muzzle but generally looked unharmed. Just looked distraught. Blackkit’s little heart was racing. What was she to do? For now she was stuck with the deputy, Softshine, and other kits in the nursery until she fell asleep.

Another piece of the story, related to my Loosing Pinekit story and speedpaint. You can find that here. All following the fanfictions "Blackbird's Choice" and "Bluefeather's Role" that I've written on and off for a few years. It's like part 1 & 2 the fanfiction directly correlate and interact. Blackbird being part 1, Bluefeather being part 2. If you're interested in this at all let me know. I have speedpaints to go along with art that will correlate with each 'chapter'... besides this one.

Please give if you have any!

All artwork is mine!

I like the story over all but a few parts were hard to follow toward the end. I'm uncertain who died or how they are important.

Over a I really like the hints at politics and prejudices. Those added a lot that made the drama of this piece impactful.

I have no idea what this is fan fiction of but I like it over all, and hope to see more like it in the future.

I’ll go back and clarify, thank you!

It was Aspengaze, Blackkit’s father.

It’s actually a warriors fan-fiction and I’m always fond of trying to make fan fictions that even people outside of the fandom can read.
