This was Astrid, my first female betta. I got her from Petco.

When I went to Petco, I was searching for a female dumbo betta, but I saw her and my plans changed. I had always wanted a red, white, and blue betta, so she ended up coming home with me.

She was one of my most photogenic bettas; her eyes were one of my favorite features. Later on in her life, they weren’t so pretty because she had cataracts, but I still loved them.

As she got older, she lost most of her eyesight and her fins had shortened and refused to grow out. Despite this, she was still a beautiful little lady!

Astrid was mostly black, but also had some red, white, and blue scattered on her body. She used to be mostly red, white, and blue with some black, but the black decided to take over throughout her life.

She also had very unique eyes; one was half white, half red with black dots, and the other was half white, half black. As she got older, they both filled in with red and some black.

Because she had cataracts, she was probably about 95% blind. She wasn’t able to find her food unless I held it right in front of her face and nudged her lip with it. Feeding time was definitely a challenge, but she fought very well.
