『 EXAMPLES 』

Today was water change day, nothing out of the ordinary, just a relaxing cleansing day. Daedric was calmly swimming around his tank while I siphoned the substrate. It seemed as though he enjoyed the company, even though I was invading his territory.

As usual, I walked away to collect the clean pre-conditioned water for his tank, when suddenly I heard a slash from the other room. I quickly ran towards the sound to examine what happened. Miraculously, Daedric jumped 5 inches and escaped his residence. I hurried to pick him up, until I noticed something very strange.

He was calmly looking around and he didn’t panic like any other betta would while out of water. Suddenly, he sat himself up and made direct eye with me. We were both confused, yet amazed. I was unsure whether I needed to rush him back into the tank or not since it appeared that he was content with breathing air just like myself.

We both sat there staring at each other, but after a little while, he began to look around the room. Daedric appeared to be thrilled that he could now examine up close all the objects that were only just a blur from his tank. He spent hours exploring this new world, and I just patiently watched him in amazement.

After countless hours went by, I finally noticed the microwave clock displaying 12:45 PM. This was only 15 minutes before my appointment with my psychologist. In a rush, I scooped up Daedric and carefully placed him back into his tank. He stared at me with a blank expression on his face. I knew he was disappointed that I ended his adventure, but after seeing such a sight, I knew I needed to make it to this appointment. This time, I made sure to put the lid back on his tank before parting ways.

I woke up after a long sleep on my leaf, out of the way of the other tank mates.

But wait, this was different. I had those long spaghetti things the humans have attached to me? I looked down to check them out, as I flexed them and straightened them, I realised. This wasn’t my tank!! I was out of the water!! But all my fins were still intact, and I was still a fish… but I had legs! I walked around, sloppily. My fins are dragging behind me. I kept gasping, worrying that suddenly I would need water. But I didn’t.

A few steps, and there was another betta! They looked exactly like me, legs and all. I flared, and when I did, they did. I went to move away, they followed, until the disappeared ? Oh right! My human sometimes shows me this strange betta sometimes! I stepped out of the open door, and in front of me was a set of steps. I carefully stepped down them, but ended up tumbling. I heard an odd jingle sound, and a huge fluffy monster came running towards me! The monster put its face right to me, sniffing around. I tapped it’s nose with my fins, it just sniffed more! I started running fast, before stumbling to a halt by the back door, watching the outside. I was tired now, so I went to sleep. Happy the monster was out of site, I drifted off quickly.

“Flare? Is that you?” said a familiar voice.

I looked, suddenly I was small again, no legs, just asleep by the door. Just as quickly as I had woken up, I began flopping around, waiting for water. She scooped me up, quickly running me upstairs to put me back in the tank. My familiar tank mates came to inspect me, and I allowed it, they weren’t as scary as the big curly monster! I looked around the plants, inspecting the shrimp.

“I will never leave my home again!” I muttered, still in shock.
