Are there problems to giant bettas?

I’m considering a giant betta for my ten gallon but I have a few questions I can’t find answers to online:

Is a ten gal big enough?

Are they ethically bred?

Is there downsides/issues to them?

Thanks!!

Both my bettas are giants, i wouldn’t get any other type now! The bigger the betta, i say… (sorry :grimacing: )

Caesar is slowing down a little compared to my other because he’s probably around 2 now, he lives in my 10-12 gallon and does just fine. My other one, Boba, has a 20 gallon to himself and quite likes it. Because they don’t have those heavy tails they typically move around more. Both of mine are from Thailand and are some of the biggest i could of got my hands on and still have no issue in a 10+ gallon. I probably wouldn’t go lower then 10 though.

As ravishing bettas mentioned, giants are bred to be big. (And with mine, colourful.) So some irresponsible breeders don’t take care to breed their healthiest bettas. Since mine are from giant breeders, not a chain, i couldn’t tell you how heathy petco or other chain giants are, but mine have never had any more health problems then other types i have had. Keep their water parameters in check, keep the right temperature and feed them right and they should be okay.

Thanks so much! I would get a giant cause they’re so cool! But I think I fell in love with a yellow and blue koi plakat :cold_sweat: I’ll see what happens! By the time I get the supplies and cycle the tank it will be over a month :weary:

Petco has some nice giants or we have a here he has a eBay also jp sells giants. Any betta can have health issues it’s all about good care an giving them the best life you can possibly I’ve had giants an I loved them. A ten gallon would be fine for one giant you could even do a 20 gallon either by themselves or if your betta has a good temperament you could do community fish in the 20 gallon. I believe one of the bettas that have the least issues is a regular plakat. Giants usually can have shorter lifespans because poorer immune systems, and vulnerable to bacterial infections, so the lifespan of giant betta is considered to be short on average. But the expected lifespan is 3 to 5 years from what I’ve read. https://lifeoffish.com/giant-betta/ this may have more information for you.

Thank you! After reading about the immune systems I’d prefer not to get one. They are super cool though! Though petcos bettas are sometimes gorgeous I won’t be buying from them. I’ve found live ones in their trash. I tried to save him but he ed quickly. :( I’m considering PNW bettas! Recommend any good online breeders?
