Hands of Sun

Given that the main roleplay versions of my characters lately all tie into Vira’s Empire rp, it was only a matter of time before the adult version of miss Kodama made another appearance in my art portfolio.

The inspiration from this piece came from a of the Turf Wars comic where Bolin was lava bending. I hadn’t drawn lava bending before, so I use that as a pose reference for both the hand form and the lava itself.

The first stage was to do a sketch, using my mechanical pencils. This sketch was done on my 9” by 12” marker paper.

Once I was satisfied with the line placement, I filled in the lines with my archival ink pens and erased the pencil. The end result of that is shown here.

The last stage of physical work was to bring out my copic sketch set to color. I filled in the foreground of Kodama and her uniform first, and then settled on a theme for the background. There are a mix of bending symbols in the background—one is the earth bending symbol. The other is one I’ve seen used as a lava bending symbol.

Often times I like to put an extra thick black border around my subject to make them pop off the background. Given how many darker colors there were in this one, I decided to skip that lining here.

Finally, I used my photo filters to for the adjustment to digital. I ended up with two versions of this piece. The other one should appear below.
