Yukito’s character growth is decidedly subtle but profound. He begins to recognise the pertinence of his mother’s stories, thus finding his tie to the tragic cycle defining Misuzu’s life. This arc is heavily woven with themes of love and sacrifice, and through Misuzu, he learns the value of selflessness and human connection.

At the beginning of the series, the viewers’ emotions toward both Misuzu and Yukito are easy to pity. Still, it is all intensified even more by the emotional weight of their journey. Misuzu’s innocence and excessive loneliness hurt, especially considering the struggle she goes through to provide herself with hope against the battle of her curse, all the while working against her. The story points out that she will be bound to have her happiness rooting for her.

On the other hand, Yukito is a chip off the old block, so to speak, right from the beginning, being aloof and offish in an attempt to look for a girl his mother had mentioned. His emotional struggles and desires become apparent when he develops his relationship with Misuzu. At first, he appears rather detached but comionate, and gradually, we begin to understand the motivations driving him towards wanting to become more than just a drifter and get involved with those around him. That story ceases to be his quest for answers and becomes a quest to protect loved ones.

This emotional string between Misuzu and Yukito, which is of fire, fuels Air. Neither is expected to heal, and Yukito has been finally seeking closure for his mother’s story throughout his life in Misuzu’s existence and suffering. Misuzu, who has never experienced unconditional love, is soothed by Yukito’s caring and watchful ways, and she finds solace.

Both feel fated to be together, not by something supernatural but by a fierce feeling that their lives have always been on a collision course. This way, they will gain that no one else can offer.

The immense emotional depth and raw storytelling truly distinguish Air. As such, it is one of those series that people either love or hate for its effect on viewers: evoking emotions related to heartrending sorrow or pure joy or just the quiet solace of human connections. It moves quickly, so the characters are drawn to develop very well, and the emotional arcs are long. The animation is rather old, but it still gives off the uncanny beauty and melancholy characteristic of this piece itself. The music, especially the opening theme, is another device that assists in this emotional impact of Air.

At its core, Air is a series that does not avert its eyes from the sad things in life.
