One of the most iconic anime there is and I’d like to give my thoughts & opinions and also my view of people being monsters personified. Are we actually born evil? Do our sins tell the truth? 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐈𝐬 𝐀 𝐃𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞－𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 ִ ﾒ

How eerie it was to finally see what the Monster anime was all about. It’s set in the old days so it already gave that antique vibe at first impression. From experience, anime like this never disappoint in the story and action. This story for sure lived up to its grand hype. You have a famous Doctor/Surgeon named Dr. Kenzō Tenma who is well known for his skills in operation and being an overall kickass doctor. Tenma displays all the qualities of a professional and everyone raved of his talents. We get introduced to a family called the Lieberts and how they fled to west to escape a horrible fate. It turned out, fate had already found them in the worst way possible. Tenma is a good man, has a snobby fiance named Ava and is supposed to marry. Tenma is the definition of a selfless & kind hearted person. Truly seeking nothing but the best for others & his patients. Even having to deal with terrible management hierarchy within his job who prioritizes politics & money over the wellbeing of human lives. Humanity. What all doctors fight to save in the medical field. Unfortunately the Liebert family meets their demise as they are found to be dead. All except for the two twins named Johan & Anna Liebert. Johan with a severe bullet wound to the head & Anna alive but severely traumatized. Just like any good doc, Tenma hops on it quickly.

Except, that’s not at all what his bosses wanted. The mayor was facing life threatening injuries and was to be the hospitals main priority. The hospital wanted Tenma to prioritize saving the mayor over the little boy Johan who had been shot to the head. Tenma acted out of his own judgement and decided to help the boy who had come in first and was just a child. If I was Tenma, I would have thought it was the right thing to do as well…

𝐀 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐨 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 ـــــــــﮩ٨ـ

Tenma’s actions led to him not only losing his job but his credibility as a doctor as well. Not getting promoted but in fact demoted and losing his bitchy fiancé in an unfortunate domino effect. The little boy Johan was alive though and that’s all that mattered to him at the time. Operation success…But at what cost? The way this scheme was designed in this anime was so perfect. So many people can relate to this story in many ways. In the real world, people make tough and brutal decisions everyday and even at the cost of humanity. Tenma being portrayed as the defiant one just did what most of us with a heart would do in that situation. It costs to be kind. You have to actually have empathy and not say it. Your actions speak louder than words and that’s all what Tenma’s character was about to me. What he could do for others. You’ll get punished for doing the right thing because it’s usually against the rules before you. The decision that quickly Tenma soon regretted. Years later having to find out that after the twins escaped the hospital, the same Johan he had helped had now revealed himself. Not only as his former patient but mastermind assassin as well.

Johan insisted that he just returned the favor to Tenma for his life. Tenma said he hated his bosses and wanted them gone. Tenma also wished for change and justice. All of the ramblings that Tenma did out of rage after he has saved Johan years ago had now come true. Saving a life that takes many others…. Damn Tenma.

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞... ⚛

Throughout the rest of the story, Tenma fights to save people from the abomination he saved years ago. Saving lives and living as an off the rails ROGUE DOC. And yes he gets the strap too. I want to tap into the character of Johan more as it relates to the topic of the blog at hand. Johan believes his existence is a mere fluke and that taking lives and orchestrating terrorism is the best way he can express himself. It’s like he’s trying to show the world how humans react in situations when they feel threatened or lose someone they love. The only one to relate to his wretched childhood is his sister Anna who grew up to be called Nina. The twins are completely different when it comes to the mind but identical in looks. When the characters would see Johan, Johan himself never thought he was there. His mind just couldn’t wrap itself around how disgusting and unjust his actions were. Even when he wasn’t present, others like Tenma felt his presence in all scenarios. This anime does a phenomenal job of creating a whole bunch of scenarios that all seem to fall back on one mastermind, JOHAN LIEBERT. The imagery & emotion that the characters bring when it comes to Johan is crazy and it just made his character all the more convincing and creepy as a threat. A true character written to be a villain. One that can’t be redeemed. Like most people in our world, you can’t just kill and act like a terrorist and not be prosecuted for your actions. On the other hand, you can choose to be a hero and still be breaking laws to do so and be prosecuted like Tenma. Each of the characters claim to be acting on what they believe is right & just. I loved the dynamic of that throughout the anime because it really kept shit interesting. It was truly like a chess game. A game of who could stop who & be cornered. It really made me stop & ask why. Just why do people do the things they do. What trigger in the mind happens to cause it? Is it just being unlucky of the draw and having a child be born evil and having that evilness prosper as they grow?

𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐥?

I guess that question will always be left up to debate. You could certainly say that one’s upbringing affects who they could become in future. It happens all the time with criminals & those deemed “bad” in society. You take a deep dive into their past and see how this could have happened. Scientists have even dissected & studied brains to find causes to human psychology & intelligence. Diagnoses. I don’t know myself if some people are actually born evil. People have sins and make mistakes because some just don’t know any better. Johan’s sister Anna was also there during the upbringing and went through a lot of hardships growing up too. Horrific scenes she recalls throughout the story and has therapy to deal with her personality disorders. The mind to me is the most powerful thing next to a heart because it makes the decisions. To live or die. To hurt or be happy. It’s so unpredictable that you really never know what to expect from people. No matter how you were raised…. I’m sure most of the skilled doctors around the world still can’t figure out why some people grow up to do the things they do. Why the mind is such a scary thing to tap into because you never truly know what one is thing or their intentions. I saw how Tenma’s intentions turned from good to bad but it was all out of a sense of justice. Having to who you are in the first place is the first step to taking control of your mind and actions.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐔𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐥

Most people call each other monsters based off of their actions. What it takes to build a monster? Bad actions. A complete lack of self awareness & harm to others. Monsters frighten and they are disgusting on the inside and out. That is a monster. This anime was one of the most well written stories I’ve ever witnessed. So much authenticity went into the story and I’m sure a lot of people can pull something from it as well. It’s crazy to thing that something like the story could happen or has already happened in our world. I guess it depends on who you view as the MONSTERS in your own life. To have such a menacing character like Johan who barely said much and acted in the shadows for the most of the story was impressive. I feel any who is an anime fan should review this anime & have a conversation. My favorite character in this series from start to finish is Tenma because I just feel he was the ultimate badass. Tenma kept his intelligence, skill, and kindness throughout the story and still didn’t become the monster he was chasing. I’m glad the series ended the way it did, although im sure some anime fans may disagree on the ending. You could spend your whole life trying to forgive people for being monsters but that’s just a waste of time and energy. Focus on putting that energy into being the hero. Put the good energy out because it always outweighs the evil. Sometimes the monsters just needed to be reminded that they could have chose not to become one. No matter the circumstance.
