As many of you may know, there are a lot of different items at Dollar Tree or Walmart that can be used as a substitute or simply to make the fish keeping hobby 10 times easier. I’ve gathered three of the most useful items, all under 5$, and given an in depth description on what they can be used for, and how they make life easier.

#1, Turkey Baster

This has saved me probably hours on picking up unwanted septics and uneaten pellets. It also can be used to blow around all the debris in the substrate to get a deeper clean when doing water changes.

#2, Sponges

I found these great sponges at dollar tree for 25¢ each. They can be used as tank cleaners or as bio media. They are really budget friendly, but make sure they are also fish friendly!

#3, Binder Clips

This is a handy little thing as they save you from holding onto a siphon/tubing which allows for more time while the water is draining and/ or filling up again, which in turn allows for doing extra maintenance while it’s draining, saving yourself time :)

This just in, a strange phenomenon with refraction has caused Dr. Kelly’s betta to turn rainbow! Check out this cute boy!

In other news, disaster struck as Marcus’ tank light shattered and broken glass fell all over the aquarium! Fortunately, no fish or animals were harmed, but hopefully this catastrophe will be resolved quickly and Marcus can get back to having some light!

Recently, a member known as Luxx has purchased a beautiful new baby! Glad to see such a beautiful betta in such a beautiful tank! Check out her new girl!

Q: How many species of bettas are there?

A: There are approximately 70 species of bettas, but almost all of those sold in pet stores are the species Betta splendens.

Q: Do I need a heater and filter for each side of a divided tank?

A: Not necessarily, you can put both on one side or each side. Just put only on one side and check how your bettas are doing. They will answer you in colors.

Q: What is the minimum tank size for a betta?

A: The minimum tank size for a betta is 2.5 gallons.

Q: What is a bubble nest?

A: Bettas make bubble nests for the eggs that the female releases. It’s a natural instinct that males have and is no danger. They’re just doing their duty!
