tips for starting at a new school

So, it’s August... The back to school commercials have started and this means that school is starting soon. For some of you, you might be starting at a new school. Whether that be transitioning from junior high to high school, or moving to a new location and starting brand new. That’s kinda tough sometimes. But, I’m here to give you the best advice that I can on starting somewhere new!

Find your class locations before the first day

Whenever I’ve started somewhere new, it’s always helped me to figure out where my classes were beforehand. Especially when the school is big! Wandering around the halls and/or different buildings at the school you’re attending can be a big help, especially when you’re running late for your next class.

However, it’s important to know that it’ll take time to figure out your way around school, even if you know where your classes are before hand. There are still some instances in which you might get lost, or a class might get changed, etc. Give yourself time to get adjusted to things, and you’ll be navigating school like a pro in no time!

a club or crew

A lot of different schools will have a welcome week of sorts where they have tables for clubs and crews open to students. A good way to make new friends is to different clubs, crews, and sports.

This is a really good way to meet new people and get involved in school activities. It’s also a good way to make lifelong friends in some cases. For me, ing band has helped me make a LOT of new friends. Things like marching band and ing my school’s radio station have helped lots, and have given me people I know for when I start college this Fall.

Participate in school activities

Another good way to meet new people is to participate in school activities. Going to things like football games or school dances are really good ways to meet people and get more acquainted with your school.

One of the best things I did before college this year was staying on campus overnight during orientation. I got to meet some new people, and I got to know the school a bit better along the way.

Find a campus mentor

Some schools allow the option of connecting you with a campus mentor. This person is usually someone who has been on campus for a few years and knows their way around, etc. This is also a really good way to get to know the campus better and hopefully come out with a new friend too.

If your school offers this option, I would highly recommend it. And if not, maybe bring it up with your s for an idea.
