So where do I begin. Basically, I was on the GF subreddit just browsing along when I saw that someone had posted a link to this trailer for a show on Netflix called Hilda with a title saying how it has a Gravity Falls charm to it.
So naturally I checked it out. Maybe it will be a new show worth watching. Oh my goodness how incredible it was...

The trailer itself was captivating and after watching the show myself, I have zero doubt in my mind when I say this, Hilda is now one of my favourite shows of all time. Dare I say it's giving GF a run for it's money. And I feel that I should explain why.
So, let's start with the plot. Hilda is based off the award-winning graphic novel series of the same name by Luke Pearson. Both follow the story of Hilda; a fearless girl who lives in a beautiful forest in a small cabin with her mom and pet Deerfox named Twig. However, when events happen that are beyond their control, it forces Hilda and her mom and a little elf named Aulfur to move to the city of Trolberg and the show follows Hilda as she learns to adapt to city life, meet new friends and discovers all sorts of weird and mysterious things along the way.
Sound familiar??

Right off the bat if you’re getting Gravity Falls vibes I do not blame you. Hilda is being called by many a mix of GF and Over the Garden Wall. Hilda herself is in a way, a mix of Dipper and Mabel. She has Dipper’s interests in the wilderness and the unknown. She also has his social awkwardness. But she gets along with people and has a personality that is just like Mabel’s when it comes to being caring to others.

While it’s nice to compare the shows, personally I feel you should watch this show as if Gravity Falls never existed. I get tired of seeing people compare it to Gravity Falls. It’s fine but for goodness sakes, treat it as it is, an original show and not like it’s a successor or heavily inspired by GF. It makes the experience of watching it all the better.

Hilda not only has great characters but like Gravity Falls (IK it’s ironic that I’m saying that), it’s visually breathtaking. The animation flows beautifully, the backgrounds are mesmerizing and the scenery is just perfect. And the music, the music is just incredible. Just listen to the theme song!
One thing that makes Hilda stand out to a show like Gravity Falls is its humor. GF has a lot of random humor that you least expect and it delivers it quite brilliantly. Hilda’s humor is more straight up and sophisticated. It is a British cartoon after all so its humor is very British. Tea references, politics, paperwork, footnotes, you name it. It’s funny though if you understand it. Did I mention there’s tea?

Then there is the nostalgia. Nostalgia is very strong in this show. I’m a very nostalgic person and watching it made me and it will make you feel and childhood. You just want go adventuring through the woods or bike through the city. There just is something so innocent and childlike about this show. It was something that made me fall in love with Gravity Falls nearly two years ago and it happened again with Hilda.

I cannot describe what it is but I’ll put it this way: Imagine sitting on a hill one summers day. The sun is setting, the wind is blowing and all is perfect. Years later you’re watching the sunset again but you’re now older. The next thing you know, the theme song to Hilda begins to play in your head. That memory becomes part of that song and now whenever you hear it, you just think of that one day in your childhood of watching the sunset. Same thing with Gravity Falls. The visuals and the look if it. It’s so nostalgia inducing and so memorable that you just cannot let it go but you can’t explain why.

Of all the shows I‘ve seen since and thanks to Gravity Falls, Hilda is now alongside GF, the closest I’ve gotten to what I want from a cartoon: a lot of nostalgia, amazing visuals, a great, captivating and short and sweet story and amazing characters to top it off.

If you’re in need of another show to watch, and one that can really be called a worthy rival to Gravity Falls (in my opinion at least), my oh my do you need to watch Hilda if you can. There’s 13 episodes out right now but they are just worth it. I can’t explain how perfect and incredible this show is in one blog. Sometimes a review by some person online is not enough, often just watching it yourself and living it is the only way one can truly understand what makes a show tick.

Hilda is truly a show worth watching for anyone who loves Gravity Falls. And if you still are not convinced…
Here’s a scene where a dream demon makes a deal with Hilda. Sound familiar.

YOU BILL CIPHEER OBSESSED FANS BETTER BE WATCHING THIS SHOW, LMAO!
Oh, and check out these two videos I made where I play the theme song of Hilda and Gravity Falls on top of the openings of each other.
Oh, how I love this show. Dipper and Mabel live on in Hilda.
