Long haired Guinea Pigs

need their hair cut once

and a while. You should only

trim their hair/fur if their hair is

getting in the way of them

doing their everyday activities

or is dragging on the ground.

Short haired guinea pigs can

be brushed, but don’t need too

often. On the other hand, long

haired Guinea Pigs require

grooming everyday because

their coats can be easily tangled

and matted. You can use and buy

tools such as small bristle brush

and metal combs. If you happen

to find a small knot, you should

cut it rather than comb it. This is

due to that Guinea Pigs have very

delicate skin and will cause pain

if you tug at it. It is important to

brush long haired guinea pig more

often if they are shedding. This is

because you want to avoid them

swallowing loose hair when they

clean themself. If they do swallow

loose hair it could result in hairballs.

If a guinea pig changes it’s cleaning

habits, it could be a sign that your

piggie is doing poorly, so you

should call your vet.

Baths should only be given

if a vet advises it or they are extremely

dirty. This is because they groom

them self with their tears called discharge.

Also it is very stressful for the

guinea pig and strips the natural

oils out of their skin. If they do

need a bath make sure no water

gets into their eyes and ears.

You need to rinse them off very

throughly and gently towel dry

them. Make sure to keep them

in a warm, dry environment

until they are completely dry.

Nails should be trimmed every

two weeks or so. If you do not

cut them they will start to curl

and the quick will grow longer,

which will make it hard to cut.

If nails are overgrown it will make

it hard for the cavy to move around.

Feet should be checked for

signs of sores, or patches.

Check eyes ears and noses for

discharge (white). A little amount

around the eyes is common when

a guinea pig is grooming themself.

If discharge increases or decreases,

or there is a discharge at other

times it may mean your guinea pig

is ill. Guinea Pigs teeth constantly

grow. They need to be checked

every week to see if they are

overgrown, broken, or loose.

Seek medical attention if any of

these occur. Weight also needs to

be checked to make sure your

guinea pig isn’t gaining or losing

weight rapidly. Check every week

and write down the weight. Guinea

Pigs rears also need to be checked

because it may start staining or dropping

that are stuck will attract flies. This

can cause a “fly strike” which can

be fatal, the condition is when flies

lay eggs that hatch into maggots.

Then eat their hosts flesh. Guinea

pigs also have a grease gland that

is situated under their tail stump.

This gland may need to be clean

with a little warm water as it can

become a bit smelly. This is

particularly on boars.

The last time I bathed my guinea pig, he jumped out onto my shirt. Should I stop bathing him when he does that?

Yep! I heard dandruff shampoo works? At the time, I had no idea you couldn’t give them baths.

Do you think my guinea pigs will be alright? I gave them maybe 3-5 baths in the past when I was new, and stupid.-
