C H A P T E R 1 8 : D O I N G A L R I G H T
After super jumping for a minute and a half, Zane and Ami both managed to stick a landing. They were back at the cliffside again, the same one they were at the day before.
"I'm sure we are safe now..."
Zane assured, looking towards Ami, who looked warn out and tired.
"B-But what about Drift? Alyssa? Or even-"
Ami worryingly asked, she started to slowly panic.
"I'm sure they'll all be okay!"
Zane assured Ami. He gently placed the Rainmaker on the ground.
"Whew... this thing is really heavy!"
Just then, Alyssa landed in front of them carrying Drift. She had tears in her eyes. She placed Drift on the ground in front of her.
"Alyssa, you look upset, are you okay?"
Ami asked, as she approached her slowly.
"He... He..."
She couldn't put her words together, she was devastated. Eventually, she managed to finish the short sentence.
"He's gone... Frederick is d-dead."
Zane gasped at this news, eyes widened.
"Wh-What?! H-How?"
He asked.
"After you two left, he chose to stay behind to face off with Bolton one-on-one. He managed to say goodbye to Drift but... but..."
She told them. Alyssa couldn't finish the sentence, she covered her face.
"I'm scared... I'm scared of how Rex will react to this!"
Ami started to tear up as the sadness coming from Alyssa was starting to affect her. She didn't have any words to say about this loss. Zane looked down to the ground and sighed. He may not have known the Commander all too well, but he knew that he was the first shot they had at surviving Bolton.
"AHHH!"
Drift screamed as he woke up, quickly bouncing onto his feet, and looking around the area.
"Where am I?!"
"Drift, calm down! You are safe, you are away from danger. We have the Rainmaker."
Zane said to him, pointing directly at the golden weapon.
Drift took one look at the Rainmaker before turning his attention to the other three survivors.
"Where's Dad?"
Zane's body started to shake in fear, he knew what was about to happen.
"D-Drift... you're father... he..."
He tried to explain what happened but couldn't find the strength in him.
"No... no, you're lying! Tell me you're lying! Tell me he didn't do it!"
Drift yelled at him. He took one look at Alyssa and Ami, their faces said it all. His face started to cringe. He walked near the edge of the cliff and sat down. He placed his hands on his head, covering his face. Just like that, the heavens opened up in his eyes.
Ami tried to walk over to Drift to comfort him, but Alyssa placed her hand on her shoulder and shook her head, insisting that she should leave him. Seeking comfort, Ami turned to Zane, whom she quickly walked up to and hugged. Zane stared at the broken young man ahead of him.
Drift had officially lost the last family member he had. First, it was his mother, and now it was his father. He was now an orphan. His hands covered his eyes, which didn't block the tears from pouring down his face.
"Drift, I'm so sorry..."
Alyssa called out to him, but no matter how hard she tried to reach him at that moment, it wasn't going to work. Drift slowly turned around, hands still covering his eyes. He then super jumped away from them, presumably into Inkopolis.
"I recommend both of you should keep your distance from him for a bit, let him grieve. And then, when he's ready... you already know."
The pair of them nodded. Ami pulled out of the hug she was having with Zane.
"We should start heading back soon..."
Ami suggested. As she finished her sentence, she yawned like a small child.
Alyssa saw the tiredness in their eyes. They all needed rest. She took off her backpack and got out of their automatic tents.
"I know it's early in the morning, but you guys need rest."
"Sounds like a plan."
Zane replied. He didn't know how he could sleep after what had just happened, but he knew he had to try.

A flame gateway opened in the middle of the courtyard and Bolton walked through, no emotion was shown on his face. He entered the throne room where he saw both Led and Jason. Jason went to greet him but stopped after seeing his face.
"Hey... you good, man?"
Led asked in curiosity. He knew Bolton could be stoic at times, but up until now, he had never seen him in this state.
"Frederick Evans is dead..."
He whispered. He sounded relieved.
"Wait, He's dead?!"
Jason questioned back at him, he was in disbelief.
"What now?"
Led asked, he had been preparing himself for another face-off with the team, but it didn't seem likely now that the leader was dead.
"Bolton...?"
Without saying anything else, Bolton turned around and opened another firey gateway with his blade, walking through and leaving his allies to process the news.

Zane woke up late in the afternoon. It was half one. Zane climbed out of his sleeping bag and got out of his tent. He took his sleeping bag out of the tent and shortly after he put the tent down. Once the tent was put down, he stared at it. He was still wearing his Splat Force gear, and he could not wait to get out of it.
Ami emerged from Alyssa's tent and smiled at him.
"Morning, Zane!"
She greeted, she sounded more calmer than she did earlier. She slept with Alyssa to feel safer, Zane understood.
"Morning, Ami!"
He greeted back with a smile.
"How did you sleep?"
"I found it hard to get to sleep, I was still shaken up about Frederick getting killed... but, I'm doing alright now."
Ami assured, giving Zane a comforting thumbs up.
"Hey Ami, I was wondering if I could talk to you about something. It's about yesterday, it's not about Frederick... It was just before that happened."
He said to her. He put his hands behind his back and breathed in.
"Oh yeah? What is it, Zane?"
Ami asked, her curiosity was killing her.
" yesterday when I said I was going to protect you... and I said you're full name?"
He asked, he wanted to make sure Ami got the idea of the conversation.
"I do, yes, it was honestly pretty adorable. Why do you ask?"
She asked him, she crawled closer to him.
"Well, I..."
Zane said, preparing himself for what was going to say next. Unfortunately, he tapped out.
"Never mind, my bad."
"It's okay."
Ami replied. The two kids were sat facing each other with their legs crossed. Ami noticed that Zane had got slightly red. She smirked at him.
"You have a crush on someone, I can feel it!"
"Wh-What?!"
Zane replied in shock, only going redder.
"No, I... why would you...?"
"I can tell from your reaction that I'm right!"
Ami said before leaning forward.
"So, who's the girl? Do I have to guess her?"
Zane knew there was no point in getting her to stop fixating, so he gave him, letting out a sigh before answering.
"I'll let you guess."
"Hehe! I love guessing games!"
Ami exclaimed, getting giddy as she slapped her hands on her legs.
"Okay, firstly... is she actually a girl? Or is it a boy?"
"She's a girl."
"Figured, just wanted to ask just in case."
Ami said before going on to the real questions.
"Does she have... long or short hair?"
"She has long hair! Prettiest long hair I've ever seen."
He answered with a light smile.
"Oh? So, you're into the long hair type, huh?"
Ami teased.
"Uhh... sure?"
He replied, going redder. He felt as if Ami was on to him, but he had to remain composed.
"Okay... does this girl commonly wear a hoodie?"
"Oh yeah. She wears one quite a lot, though, for the past month, she's not been wearing it as much."
"Okay... I think we're getting somewhere..."
She murmured teasingly before asking the next question.
"Does she have any freckles?"
"Yes. They only make her more adorable."
Zane answered.
Ami giggled, now it was her who was blushing.
"Does she wear a bobble hat?"
"Uhh... yeah, she does."
Zane awkwardly answered. Suddenly, Ami started laughing. She knew who it was now.
"Heh, what's so funny, Ami?"
"Hmm... by any chance does she have pink hair, blue eyes, and pale skin?"
"Oh... well."
Zane answered, Ami stopped giggling and looked at Zane, covering her mouth with her long hair.
"Maybe... argh, you know who I'm on about!"
"Maybe..."
She teased.
"I wanna hear you say it!"
"Okay... I'll say it!"
Zane said. He took a deep breath and composed himself before spilling the beans.
"The girl I'm on about is you!"
Ami didn't giggle. She gradually lowered her hair. Her mouth was open and smiling. Of course, she knew it was gonna be her, but Zane itting to it hit differently.
"I knew it."
She whispered.
Zane let out a relieved sigh now that the truth was out there.
"When I first moved to Inkopolis, I never thought I'd have a personal connection with anyone. I just thought I'd stay for a bit, not make any friends, and then dip again, that's how it always happens with my family, after all."
Zane said before gently holding Ami's hands, making her gasp.
"And then I met you, Ami. Your smiles and positive mindset make me feel joy, especially during tough times at home. I realized that I liked you when you were at my place, specifically when you gave me that hug. No girl ever gave me one before, so that was just different and new to me. You never stopped smiling back then, and you haven't stopped smiling now, even after everything. You are probably the most cute girl I've met in my life, not only in looks but in your bubbly personality."
Ami placed both hands over her chest and smiled at Zane. Never in her life had someone complimented her like he just did.
"Aww..."
She whispered.
"That was so sweet! Thank you!"
"You're welcome."
Zane said before asking the most important question that he could ask at this time.
"So, what I really want to ask is... would you like to be my g-g-girlfriend? You don't have to if you don't want to, but-"
Ami shushed Zane by placing a finger over his mouth. He was stunned and now his face was as rosy as Ami's hair. She smiled at him.
"You don't have to ask twice. The answer is yes!"
Ami answered.
That was it. The pair of them had officially started their new relationship. Zane smiled.
"I guess we are both on the same boat after all."
"Yeah, we are!"
Ami whispered back.
Feeling the love in the air, the two teenagers quickly leaned forward before embracing in a kiss. It was both of their first kisses, and it felt as magical as they imagined it to be.
The kiss lasted only a few seconds before the pair of them pulled out. They looked at each other and giggled. Ami accidentally pushed Zane to the ground in her attempt to hug him. The pair laughed for a moment before embracing each other with Ami now laying on his chest, feeling Zane's fast heartbeat.
Although she wasn't out yet, Alyssa heard the whole thing from inside her tent and smiled. She saw this coming from a mile away. She knew that it was only a matter of time until one of them confessed to the other.
L A T E R T H A T D A Y . . .
Coming in from a super jump, Alyssa landed on the ground, she was now close to the exit of the forest. Moments later, she was ed by her happy loving duo.
"We're nearly there, just a little closer!"
She told them.
"Yay!"
Ami exclaimed in excitement.
The three of them began to see a large road up ahead. It was the exit. They just had to get a little further. Alyssa quickly stopped them.
"Before we continue, there is something I haven't told you two."
Alyssa said. Confused, the pair of them stopped to listen to what she had to say.
"Whilst you two were sleeping, I made two separate calls. One for you, Ami, and one for you, Zane. If you want to know who I called, run to the exit! Go, go, go!"
Zane and Ami looked at each other and giggled to themselves as Alyssa encouraged them to run. They ran hand-in-hand as they finally reached the exit.
There was a wide parking space in front of a road ing two rows of houses. The road led into the city. Parked before Zane and Ami were two cars. Standing next to each of them from left to right were Selina Miller and Samantha Stewart.
"SAMANTHA!!!"
She screamed as she sprinted forward and slammed right into the arms of her sister.
"Oh Ami, I've missed you!"
Samantha said to her, hold her head against her chest. Her eyes were filled with tears as she cradled her excited sister.
Meanwhile, Zane walked over to his mother and looked her in the eyes. She didn't say a thing at first, but after a few seconds, she quickly grabbed ahold of him and embraced him in her arms.
"My baby! I'm so sorry I wasn't there!"
Selina said as she started to sob.
"Mom, it's okay! I'm here now!"
Zane assured as he continued to hug his mother. Eventually, they let go of each other.
"Hold on a minute."
Zane walked over to Ami. There was a battle of smiles going on between them.
"So, when are we going on our first... you know?"
"You are allowed to say date!"
Ami said jokingly before answering.
"Saturday? We've got school for the next three days, ?"
"Good point... Saturday it is."
Zane replied before walking back to his mother. He quickly looked back at his new girlfriend.
"I guess I'll see you at School!"
"See you at school!"
Ami called back to him before ending the conversation with the last three words she wanted to say.
"I love you!"
Zane had the biggest smile on his face upon hearing those words from another girl.
"I love you too!"
As they said their goodbyes, the pair of them got into their respective cars. Samantha left the parking area first, with Selina driving behind her. It was over now, time to get back to their regular lives.
2 M O N T H S L A T E R . . .
Over the next couple of months, the love that the pair of them shared only grew stronger and stronger. They met up almost every weekend. They did Turf Wars together, they watched movies together, they went shopping together. In only a few weeks, they had become inseparable.
Their love carried into School as well. Upon their return, there was talk going around as to why they were missed the first three weeks back after Easter break, but the talks then shifted to the fact that the pair were now a thing.
Very quickly, their mini-friend group adapted to the change and encouraged the relationship, making both Zane and Ami happier. Together, the pair of them went on mini-study dates both in and out of school to catch up on what they had been missing in lessons. They got their work done whilst sharing many laughs along the way.
At last, their big exams came around. Each test proved to be harder than the last, with Ami caving into the pressure after only a few tests, leaving Zane to be the shoulder to cry on during the rainy exam weeks.
Thankfully, exam season flew by as quickly as it flew in, and the pressure was lifted. The pair of them were able to be happy again without feeling stressed over school.
The school was now able to move on to its fun late-year activities, starting with the annual Sports Day. The five schoolhouses all faced off against one another in an ultimate day out in the sun, with the students wearing their sportswear the whole day. Ami came five out of twelve in the egg 'n spoon race whereas Zane came second in the relays race. It was clear that their Splat Force training had helped them greatly.
Lastly, it was prom night. Of course, Zane and Ami went together, they had to. They hung out the entire night, sharing laughs, cuddles, and kisses. Everyone who attended got to see Zane and Ami come out of each other's shells. They were voted as prom king and queen.
Eventually, the pair of them made it to the last day of High School. The grounds of Barika Academy were filled with nothing but screaming, positive screaming, that is. All the older kids were either running around the playground like headless fish or hugging their friends. Photos were taken and messages were written on shirts.
"I'm gonna miss you so much!"
"Come here, mate!"
"Good luck!"
Zane and Ami were with their friend group, with the former of the pair giving T-Dawg a pat on the back.
"Good luck, T-Dawg! I hope you get somewhere with your music!"
He said to him, to which he gave him a thumbs up.
Zane sat down on one of the benches and watched all the madness going around, the only students aloud outside were the oldest years, so that they could say their goodbyes.
"Having a blast are you?"
Ami asked him, walking toward him and sitting down next to him. She wrapped her right arm around his shoulders.
"Well, I can safely say I managed to get to the end of the academic year. If my Dad was still around, I probably would've moved out by now. But, I'm still here, and I'm happy about that!"
He replied. Although he never got to truly know anyone outside of his small friend group, he was happy to at least make some memories from here.
"I'm glad you had fun here!"
Ami replied before giving him a kiss on the cheek, making Zane blush a little.
Zane then wrapped one of his arms around her, giving her a side hug. However, their hug was interrupted by their history teacher.
"Having a great time, are you?"
Peter Watson asked with a cheeky raised eyebrow.
"Oh, Mr. Watson! Yeah, we are!"
Ami greeted, answering his question with a huge welcoming smile.
"I'm glad to hear it! I look forward to hearing about your future endeavors!"
Peter said. He then leaned in closer to the pair of them with a more serious look on his face.
"Have any of you two heard from Drift?"
"I ran into him at a café a couple of weeks back. He still seemed down."
Zane sighed.
"He told me that he did his exams at home and handed them into reception. He told me he was fine, but I'm not buying it. Didn't get much outta him."
"I see..."
Peter replied.
"Anyone would act that way if they lost a parent."
Both Zane and Ami looked up at their teacher, looking surprised.
"Wait, you know about his Dad?"
Ami asked.
"Yes, I knew him."
Peter told them.
"There is a lot more about me that you two don't know. If you ever me in the street, I'll be happy to share some stories with you two."
Peter Watson gave them one last little wink before leaving the young couple. Zane looked at Ami.
"You thinking what I'm thinking?"
"Yeah, I think so."
Ami replied. She then switched topics.
"So, are you looking for the buffet?"
"Oh! Of course!"
He answered with a light laugh at the end.
"Can't wait to spend another night with the best girl ever!"
"Aww, Zane!"
Ami exclaimed before hugging Zane tightly.
R I N G , R I N G , R I N G ! ! !
After a few minutes, the school bell rang one last time. The school year had officially come to a close. Zane and Ami walked out of the school grounds and entered the parking space.
"So... College in September, just under two months away."
Zane said, starting a new conversation between them.
"Are you excited?"
"Absolutely! I can't wait to start College with you, and hopefully Drift!"
Ami answered, sounding more bubbly about her future.
"I heard Todarodes College is a great place. Samantha went there for her studies. She did a chef course there."
"That's cool! It probably explains why she's a great chef."
"It does!"
Ami replied before she brought Zane's question back to himself.
"Are you excited about College?"
"Yeah, of course! I'll finally be out in the real world... whilst also living with Mom still, but you get what I mean!"
He said, making Ami giggle.
"That, and it'll mean spending more time with you. That alone makes me excited!"
"Aww, you're so sweet!"
Ami replied before giving Zane a small peck on his left cheek.
L A T E R T H A T E V E N I N G . . .
Samantha drove the young couple back to her and Ami's apartment. The three of them had been on a small shopping trip and collected five bags worth of food.
The three of them got out of the car and opened the boot. Samantha and Zane grabbed bags each, leaving Ami with the last, smaller bag. The three of them headed up the long stairs until they reached their apartment floor.
Samantha quickly dropped her bags to grab the apartment key from her pockets. She unlocked the door and picked up her bags again before heading inside.
"Home, sweet home!"
Samantha said before heading to the kitchen.
"Shall we get started?"
"Yeah!"
Ami cheered excitingly.
"Absolutely!"
Zane answered.
"Alright then!"
Samantha said. She stopped walking and turned to the young teenagers.
"Operation College is now underway!"
The three of them placed the bags on the kitchen table and quickly began to unpack. It was a team effort, but eventually, they finally unpacked all of the bags.
Usually, they'd start packing away the food, but they need it all out. It was time to start the buffet. Zane and Ami grabbed plates from the cupboard and lined them out on the dining table as Samantha started to cook, putting the fish in the oven after seasoning it whilst mashing the potatoes.
Once the plates were set up, Zane and Ami began with the kebabs. They placed them in a wide bowl along with the carrots on sticks, the cheese and pineapple sticks, and fish fingers. Next came the meat, all of which was spread out across different plates along with buttered and garlic bread.
At last came the sweat treats. Samantha took out a baked cake from the cupboard and placed it on the side for later. Next to the cake were two plates, one having mini cupcakes, and the other having mini donuts.
At last, the buffet had been finished. Now, it was time to feast. The three of them grabbed one large plate each and selected from the food they had dished out. Ami grabbed a few fish fingers, as well as one slice of the warm buttered bread and a cheese and pineapple stick. Zane grabbed a scope of mashed potato along with a slice of garlic bread, and Samantha took some fried and nothing else.
They each ate their meals as they discussed stories from their lives, starting with Samantha, who told them a story about one of her most successful shifts.
"After that, this big-looking fellas showed up after we finished our third round. We were all exhausted after those glowing little squits that we had little energy left. Yet somehow, we pulled through and took him down! It was close, we almost lost half the team!"
She said, terrifying the other two.
"So... don't work at Girzzco... got it."
Zane noted to himself.
Next up to tell a story was Ami.
"It was down to just me. Drift was the only one who had confidence in me that round, although I don't know why, all I did was just stand in the corner and cower from the balls. I mean, it's called dodgeball for a reason, right?!"
She told them. Zane seemed way too interested in this story.
"Before I knew it, the other team had lunged all of the balls at my face. I got obliterated!"
"Damn it! I was hoping for a happy ending!"
Zane said with a frown.
Before Zane could tell his story, it was cake time! They each rushed over and grabbed a slice of cake. It was delicious. It was a sponge cake with jam and cream in the middle, along with pink icing on the top with red writing that read:
'Good riddance, High School!'
They each ate their cake as Zane told them his story.
"And then, after the match, Emily turned to me and went "How you doin' all that, love?", and I just told her that I'm naturally gifted!"
"Haha! You tell her!"
Ami cheered.
Samantha wondered one thing about Zane's story.
"Why do you do that weird voice when you say her words?"
"Oh! She has an accent. She got it from my Uncle Oscar."
He answered.
As the mini party went on, less and less food was being left on the table. Eventually, all that was left were the leftovers. However, they were all too stuffed to eat anymore.
"Zane... carry me to bed... please!"
Ami begged. Zane smiled before picking her up like he was holding a newborn baby.
L A T E R T H A T N I G H T . . .
The young couple laid in bed. Ami was on the bed to the right, whereas Samantha took the bed to the left. On the right wall was the door to the bathroom. Ami's side had warm blankets and posters on the wall with a box of plushies at the back. Whereas Samantha's side was tidy with thin bedsheets and the only thing on her wall was a schedule sheet for her Salmon Run shifts.
Ami laid on her bed, she was now wearing a black crop top with black shorts. She was giving her bloated stomach room to breathe. Zane laid next to her, only in his shorts. He was rubbing her tummy gently.
"Y-Yeah, haha! Samantha is mainly happy that she gets to look after someone, though she mainly looks after herself. Especially during her school days. She had a few relationships here and then, but those were more like little flings and nothing else. Most guys were just... after her butt."
Ami whispered at the last part, keeping her voice low just in case Samantha could hear her, despite the fact she was chilling in the living room.
"Modern-day schools really be like that, huh?"
Zane sighed, just thinking about how incredibly weird some of his jocks were towards the girls.
"Yeah, someone tried to perv on me once, which actually frightened me to bits. Luckily, Drift was there to stop them..."
She said. Ami's voice dropped ever so slightly after bringing up Drift.
"I'm sorry... I just miss him, I hope he's okay..."
"Hey, don't be sorry! It's okay to be worried. I'm worried about him too! I know that losing your family member would be tough, whether that be through death or divorce, but the important thing is that in the end, we all come back from it."
Zane said in an attempt to cheer her up.
"And I'm sure Drift isn't an exception."
"I know but, from all the time I've known him, I know full well that he's quite sensitive. I know how he can get whenever things don't go well for him, luckily, I managed to calm him down each time. With a loss like his father, someone he looked up to, I'm scared that he won't recover from it."
Ami muttered with a frown on her face.
"I see... the best case scenario I see happening is him managing to be social again, even if he never gets over it. That's all we can hope for. Maybe the best thing to do is to think about the best-case scenario. Who knows maybe if we think hard enough, it could come true. I know that sounds stupid and unrealistic, but we are living in a world full of gifted sea critters, if that's normal, then anything can be!"
Zane said assuringly.
Ami smiled.
"Thank you, Zane! You are such a great speaker! I could listen to you giving me inspirational speeches for the rest of my life."
She said to him now that her frown had been turned upside down.
"Does that mean that I'm a good boyfriend or...?"
"Hell yeah, it does! High five!"
She assured him, raising her hand in the air, Zane clapped his hand against hers. After the high five, Ami gently and slowly rubbed her stuffed belly before quietly asking a dumb question.
"What should we name our food baby?"
Zane looked down at Ami's stomach as he continued to rub it.
"I was thinking... Arron."
"Arron... I like that name."
Ami whispered back with a giggle.
"If it's a girl, I'm thinking Leah. That's a cute name."
"I agree with you there."
Zane replied.
Ami turned to her left and looked at her shirtless boyfriend, smiling at him.
"When I first met you, I knew we'd have something special, I didn't know what exactly, but I knew whatever it was would be incredible."
Zane smiled at Ami's comment.
"I felt the same way back then."
He told her.
"I don't know what it was, but I felt something alright."
"Well, look at us now. I bet Drift saw this coming from a mile away, huh?"
She said, making Zane chuckle and nod. It was through mentioning Drift again that Ami now had an idea.
"I want to call him. I'm not sure if it'll work, but who knows."
"Go for it, Ami!"
Zane said to her.
Ami reached for her phone that was lying next to her hip. She dialed up Drift's number and called him. She put the phone on speaker. All they heard was the phone ringing on repeat for thirty seconds before being sent to voice mail.
"Nothing..."
"Damn..."
Zane replied with a sigh. Ami put her phone away.
"That's okay, we can try again later, right?"
"Yeah."
Ami said before wrapping her arms around Zane, pulling him in for a snuggle.
"Right now, I wanna hold you like you're my baby."
"I'm happy to fulfill those desires, Ami."
Zane replied gently as he too wrapped his arms around Ami. The pair of them closed their eyes and began to drift off to sleep.
