Minecraft is a sandbox game released 2011 by Swedish game developer Mojang Studios. Originally created by “Notch” which was then handed to Jens “Jeb” Bergensten. Minecraft has been ported to many platforms from mobile phones to consoles, making it one of the best selling video games of all time. In 2014 Microsoft purchased Minecraft and its intellectual property for US$2.5 billion.

When you first enter Minecraft, you’ll have options to choose how exactly you want to play the game; peaceful, easy, normal, hard, and lastly hardcore. Easy, normal, and hard are straightforward choices and you shouldn’t feel shame for how you decide to play the game. Peaceful and hardcore are total opposite ends of each other. For example, hard makes the game more challenging, however hardcore makes the stakes higher as you won’t be allowed to respawn. Easy makes the game more relaxed, however peaceful takes away hunger and aggressive mobs. Furthermore, there are “cheats” you can choose from to make the game more enjoyable/easy, such as “keep inventory on”. No matter how you play, it’s valid and only matters if you’re having fun.

When you load into the world, you’ll spawn in a random biome and seed (if you didn’t choose to make your own seed/look up a seed to play in). The first thing you’re going to want to do is a). Get wood/tools, b.) get food, possibly a bed, and c.) shelter. Mobs will spawn at night and it’s ideal to be prepared to at least survive the night, if push comes to shove making a hole and hiding in it will suffice however a bed will prevent mobs like creepers from spawning. You make a bed by slaying three sheep and taking their wool, using the wool and wood you’ve gathered to make a bed. Now, the wool has to be the same color as each other, but if you have nearby flowers you can use them to dye the wool all the same color so you can craft a bed. Don’t worry, you can change the color of your bed any time with dye. When you get injured your health bar will go down, and when it fills back up it takes from your hunger bar, so it’s vital to gain substantial food resources early as you’ll need food to continue replenishing your health.

When mining, I recommend taking wood with you, maybe a few chests and a crafting table and a LOT of torches. It’s a meme that when you start on a coal vein it’ll go on forever, however when you run out of it, you’ll definitely be missing it. Mobs spawn in the dark, and they’re abundant in caves and anywhere the light doesn’t shine. That’s why torches will be so important. Once you have a relatively safe area figured out to mine at you’ll want to get some stone tools, as the only wood tool you should care about is a pickaxe so you can immediately get better equipment. Once you have a stone pickaxe, sword, and maybe an axe if you’re feeling festive, DEFINITELY make a furnace which you can make at a crafting table with stone. Furnaces are important as you can cook both food and ores in them. Then try and move on to iron. When you initially find iron it will be an ore in the rock, you won’t be able to use it right away. You’ll have to take it to the furnace and smelt it with coal or wood (coal is far better, so don’t use all of it to make torches).

Now, people usually say to immediately make a pickaxe out of your iron which is understandable as iron pickaxes are superior to both stone and wood, and can be used to mine diamonds. However I feel personally the best thing you can make right away with iron is a shield, as they’re great at protecting you from enemies. Creeper blast? Shield. Zombie? Shield it. Skeleton shooting at you from afar?? Shield and sometimes the arrows hit the skeletons.

My other recommendation to beginner players is to play firstly without mods, to get a feel of the game and to also play on either easy or normal. There’s no need to stress yourself out over something trying to become an expert when you’re a beginner, the point of Minecraft isn’t to immediately go kill the Ender Dragon or to fight the Warden (although those are things you can totally do lol), Minecraft is literally just a do-whatever-you-want game. This can be both a good and bad thing, as many people become bored/stressed at there not being any true “goal”. However if you stop comparing yourself to Minecraft YouTubers and just make what YOU want, even if it’s a dirt hut with 28 cats all around it and a Enderman you trapped in a boat as a wife, GO FOR IT! You don’t have to be like some big time YouTuber making massive projects (although you could!), you can just do whatever.
