This post may be split into parts depending on how much material I have to go through. As there is a bit because this effects how I (Eleven) interact with the world
This isn’t a must but if the feature cult could kindly recommend this to be featured I would be grateful. I’m trying my hardest to spread awareness for disabilities, particularly hidden, and the feature feed is the best way to do so
My name is Eleven, I’m going through another questioning phase but please refer to me as He/Xey/Void for right now.
I was professionally diagnosed with this at a young age, so please don’t run to the comments and say I’m self diagnosing. I was three months premature and I can’t make up how many problems I have <3 just be thankful that I’m here

What is CVI and how do you get it?
Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is a birth condition, I couldn’t find how many children are born with it but somewhere while looking for reliable sources I encountered that it is about 48% of uk diagnosis’s. This can be paired with other problems (cerebral palsy, epilepsy, etc) but sometimes it can be a stand alone problem. It can also be paired with ocular problems
how you get it, to quote from source 2 “CVI is caused by an injury to the brain. Most of the time, these injuries happen before, during, or shortly after birth.”
Premature babies, also according to source 2, are also more likely to have the disorder.

Common symptoms of CVI
All information relayed from source 1! Everything marked with * are things I experience and I may talk about some later
CVI affects each child uniquely and to differing degrees. An affected child may also have an eye condition causing visual impairment, but many people affected by CVI may have “healthy eyes”, yet function as if severely visually impaired. It is vital that difficulties are identified and appropriate strategies are put in place to the child. Here are some of the ways that CVI might affect a child:
Vision seems variable; the child appears see less well when tired or ill. *
Difficulty finding the beginning of a line or the next word when reading, or misses pictures or words on one side of a page. *
Reaching beyond or around the object when picking it up, perhaps grasping it incorrectly, missing or knocking it over.
Uncoordinated movement. *
Gets lost, anxious or distressed in visually complex places such as crowded places, supermarket, or busy swimming pool, or cinema. * (*cough* train station *cough*)
Regularly bumps into things when walking while talking. *
Sits closer than 30 cm to the television.
Difficulty concentrating in visually busy environments, especially if noisy too. *
Inability to fix on objects for any length of time.
Difficulty selecting a toy from a full box or clothing from a pile or full drawer.
Lack of, or slow response to objects on a “busy” background which the child may respond to against a plain, contrasting surface.*
Eye movements not made independently of head movements, or not very regular and “smooth”.*
Difficulty recognising familiar people or objects such as the family car or classroom door. *(depends but I do struggle with seeing things that have been added to a room)
Reacts angrily when distracted from a task.
Lack of response to faces or facial expressions.* (my stepdad pointed out how I suck at visual cues)
Profound difficulty copying down information.*

My personal experiences
So yes, CVI. I hate it, in the point that talks about being distressed in “crowded” situations, I’ll give you a little story
I went to the circus about 3 weeks ago with my family right. And my dad asked me to go buy some popcorn (mostly because I was on the outside seat). So I did, and the first time I had to go back and ask for more money because it was over a tenner (£10) and the second time I went the girl told me to wait there because there was only like 1 thing of popcorn left and I needed 4
And when I told you I almost cried being stood there waiting.
Its because there was so much noise and people moving around me and I was so scared someone would knock into me or some shit and yell at me. It was great
The way I’d describe being in crowded situations is like a permanent sensory overload- at least when there’s a lot of flashing lights and loud noise
and yet I want to go to a concert.
When I was like 5 or something I this lady came to my house (discussing this: Eye movements not made independently of head movements, or not very regular and “smooth”.) she asked me to look across the room, and I did (like look to my left) and she was like “no, not with your head.”
and I it took me like 5 minutes to look around with my eyes alone. It sucked
I also just cannot do where’s Wally/Waldo to save my life, same with word searches, although in my later years I’ve developed strategies to do them. I’ve still never completed a where’s Wally before.

How can you help someone with CVI
If you’re going to make a post, type in paragraphs instead of long blocks as the person you’re talking to may skim read. Same thing applies to posts (like bruh when previewing im struggling to read my own post it sucks)
and by paragraphs I mean double tapping enter I don’t mean:
Stuff like this an example, single pressing enter doesn’t really make a difference as its still
a longer Block of text without a real space between as an example here’s what happened when I was trying to space out section 2:

As you can see, I struggled a lot more with the longer points than I did with the shorter. And upon reading if you do find two posts unspaced- let me know.
If you’re a font , please be aware fonts like 𝕿𝖍𝖎𝖘 and ɬɧıʂ (and other fonts where the letters are contorted in weird ways) are a pain in the ass to read, probably are anyway.
To me, fonts like 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 or ᴛʜɪs where the text is slightly bolder and/or blockier is much easier to read
I’ve seen the word “this” so much it’s beginning to lose meaning :skull:

Thanks for reading this if you do! I will make posts about other disorders so if there is one you’d like to cover, leave a message on my wall and I’ll dm you about it- just be prepared with some sources !
