Synopsis

In a lonely corner of the world, on the edge of No Man's Land, sits Clocktower Fortress. It's home to the 1121st Platoon of the Helvetian Army, and their newest member is a 15-year-old volunteer named Kanata Sorami, who enlisted to learn how to play the bugle. When she was a child, Kanata was saved by a beautiful soldier and found inspiration in the clear, golden sound of her trumpet. From that day forward, Kanata decided music would be her life.

As the other platoon train her how to be a bugler and a soldier, Kanata's enduring optimism will inspire them to look for happiness and beauty, even in a world haunted by war.

Kanata Sorami

Kanata Sorami is our main protagonist of the series. She is a happy-go-lucky kind of girl that is almost always positive and friendly. She is also highly skilled in playing the trumpet.

Rio Kazumiya

Rio Kazumiya acts as the leader of the group and Kanata's mentor in mastering the art of the trumpet. She is strong-headed and very leader-like, but does have her faults especially when it involves drinking.

Noël Kannagi

Noël Kannagi is a seemingly quiet and perverted individual that acts calm, cool, and collected. She is very odd throughout the entire series, but proves to be extremely helpful later on.

Thoughts

I found Sora no Woto to be so boring and slow-paced that I considered dropping it halfway through, but continued watching because I had nothing else to do. In the end, I was glad that I made the decision to follow through with it. The artwork was just jaw-droppingly detailed, mainly with the setting. Although the character designs were sub-par and comparable to anime series such as K-On and The Idolm@ster, the setting was the complete opposite.

The opening and ending songs contrast to great lengths considering tone and lyrics. The opening is calm and mature with a tone that's similar to a lullaby and had many animations with varying images of the characters, while the ending was very upbeat and energetic with no animations besides the credits.

As for the characters, I liked how they varied in personalities yet they all come together to form one great team. Also, again with their different personalities, it was interesting to see how they interacted with each other, especially with Noël and her semi-perverted ways. The idea of moe girls in a military anime was very unique as well and generated an entirely new sense to the military genre.

But just… just praise the godly art.
