Larimar is an extremely rare form of Pectolite. Although some sources say it may also be found in the Bahamas, it is known to only be found in one place in the Dominican Republic. It is known for its turquoise color, with white wave-like streaks. Larimar is a stone of many names, including Dolphin Stone, Blue Pectolite, Atlantis Stone, and Stefilia's Stone. Its commonly accepted name Larimar, is a combination of Larissa and Mar. Larissa is the name of the daughter of the man who re-discovered the stone, and Mar is the Spanish word for sea. Although it is a water stone, it is a volcanic stone born of Fire. Larimar is thought to balance these two elements’ energies.

Larimar is a type of Pectolite. Pectolite is often very soft, due to the dense radiating fibers it is formed by. However, Larimar is a rare type of Pectolite that is harder. This is due to the fibers interlocking, which makes it very solid. This allows Larimar to withstand faceting and carving. Larimar’s blue coloring can range from greenish-blue, to a deep sky blue. This blue coloring is due to copper inclusions within the stone. In the gem industry, deeper coloring with fewer white inclusions is deemed more desirable. These Larimar specimens are therefore more expensive. There are no treated or synthetic versions of Larimar. However, some white crystals have been known to be dyed to resemble Larimar. Larimar may also contain red or brown areas of oxidation or hematite inclusions.

A stone of the sea, it is perfectly safe to cleanse Larimar using water. However, because its coloring is due to copper, a toxic compound, it should not be used in potions or elixirs. A solution of salt and natural water will cleanse all negative energy from your Larimar. Its blue coloring is light-sensitive, it may fade over time if exposed to direct light or heat. It is best to keep it away from bright windows. Due to this Larimar should also be charged under moonlight instead of sunlight. Larimar is a soft stone, and can easily be scratched. Care should be taken when storing it with other crystals and stones to avoid damaging it.
