Self Worth

You may feel like you just aren’t good enough. You may hate your body, you may hate your personality, you may hate the way you awkwardly stumble through conversations.

You may lock yourself in your room and refuse to talk. You may close yourself off from your family, your friends, the people you love.

You may feel like no one cares about you. You may want to die.

But hear this.

The first step to becoming happy again, to feeling good, is loving yourself. You can’t control what you were born. You can’t control what other people think of you. You can’t control all the little bad things that life annoyingly sprinkles upon you every day.

But you can control your self worth.

•——————•

“I’m fat,” you say. So what? Why is that a bad thing? Society has labeled bodies with above average weight as ‘bad’. Why, society? Why go out of your way just to make people feel bad? Body image issues are legitimate. And people with body image issues are legitimate, too. You can be any weight, you don’t have to be ‘pretty’, you don’t have to be perfect. You can love yourself for who you are. You don’t need to feel anxious, and you don’t need to have that horrible weight of self consciousness on your chest. Trust me. If you learn to love your body, you will feel much better. It may take a while - forever, it will seem - but you can do it. You can feel whole.

“Nobody loves me,” you say. It may seem that way. Maybe your family rejected you after you came out, or maybe your friends abandoned you. But there is always someone, although you may not be able to see them, who would cry for months if you were gone, someone whose heart would simply shrivel up without you. That person could be a good friend. A parent. A relative. I could be that person, if you wanted me to. There is always someone who loves you. There is always someone who depends on you. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you will feel happy. It’s all a matter of perspective, and seeing that your worldview depends on your sense of self worth. Somebody. Loves. You.

•——————•

“I’m so awkward,” you say. And maybe you are. But why is that a bad thing? You don’t have to be good at talking to people to love yourself. You don’t have to be perfect. Nobody is perfect. Don’t feel the need to be comfortable in conversation. Plenty of people are introverted, awkward, or have social anxiety. Don’t let your awkwardness bring you down. It’s small. It doesn’t have to make you feel bad. You are you, and you deserve to feel good about yourself.

•——————•

“I want to die,” you say. But what would happen then? How many people would cry for you? If you were gone, so many people would grieve, so many people would feel their hearts shrivel up, their minds close off. So many people value you. You may not be perfect, you may not be exactly what you want to be, but that’s okay. Learning to love yourself takes time. Use that time. Build up your confidence and surround yourself with good, loving people, even if those people are online friends. People care about you. You can care about you, too. It feels quite fantastic if you do.

Don’t let bullies hinder your sense of self worth. , this is what you think, not what others think. Not everyone will love you. Some people simply choose to vent their anxiety or anger by hurting others. They may be mean to you, but that doesn’t mean that their insults, their derision, are correct. Stay strong, my friend. You are beautiful enough, loved enough, and strong enough to overcome the hate. Love yourself for who you are. Think about what you love about yourself. It isn’t selfish. It isn’t vain. It builds you up and gives you confidence. Focus on the good. You will always be able to find the good in yourself.

•——————•

You don’t have to be the prettiest. You don’t have to be the smartest. You don’t have to be the most confident. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to conform to other people’s expectations. You don’t have to be or do any of those things to love yourself.

There is only one step to gaining a sense of self worth, and it is this: be yourself and rejoice in the fact that you are free. Others will try to confine you. You don’t have to let them. Others will try to make you feel bad. Don’t let them.

Your own brain will try to make you feel bad. Don’t let it.

You are unique, loved, strong, and beautiful, and you deserve to feel every one of those things.
