Island Adventure Kebabs

Ever wanted to be like Lars and whip up your own fish kebabs?

Well, now you can!

I took a look at the model sheets for the fish kebabs Lars made in the episode "Island Adventure," digging for specifics on the ingredients. I didn't find any.

Besides the big masked fish, there seem to be a couple fruits or veggies on there; one looks like a mini-pumpkin and one looks like an apple. It seems like they're just foods they were able to gather from around the island.

I don't eat fish because I'm vegetarian, so my ability to make this authentically is pretty limited. So I figured I'd just use frozen vegetarian fish and whatever I could gather up from MY island.

I ended up with Gardein brand vegetable "fish," dried plums, and cherry tomatoes.

You can also use figs, plums, crabapples, dates, small red potatoes, peppers...anything that looks similar.

I cheated regarding my "fish." Since it's frozen, I oven-cooked it first to make sure it wouldn't still be frozen inside after fire-cooking. If your fish starts looking at you unpleasantly, you can always cover it up with a bay leaf.

Take your skewers and just start carefully pressing the food pieces onto the stick.

The fake fish fillets I chose are a pretty nice size for this project, but cutting them in half would also work if you want more to intersperse with the veggies.

All right! Ready!

And now, go start a fire and cook your food.

Be careful when cooking over open flame. Your sleeves should not be near the fire and you shouldn't use fire starters that contain chemicals that shouldn't be in your food. (Starter bricks sometimes say on them that you shouldn't barbecue over them.)

To be honest, I lack a setup to safely thoroughly cook food in my fireplace. It's really just good for warming it up. If you would like to cook this in the oven, you can take some olive oil and spice it (I recommend salt, garlic, and maybe lemon juice!) and baste your kebabs with the mix, then bake for about 10 minutes at 400°F / 205° C.

If you're not into fish or fake fish, you could always duplicate what the Crewniverse did to celebrate this episode and try taiyaki.

Taiyaki is a fish-shaped cake from Japan. It is not actually fish. They're most commonly filled with this slightly sweet bean paste (I've had it, not a huge fan personally), and have a sorta cakey/waffley consistency. Since the Crew did it, I thought about making taiyaki on skewers to represent this episode, but didn't really wanna buy a specialty taiyaki pan. But you could try!

Why not candy kebabs?

This time I used the same dried plums, plus cry babies and Swedish fish. Just slide those on and you have a candy version of Lars's fine cuisine.
