Chapter 1

“Are we there yet?” Jace complained for what had to have been the hundredth time as the group walked through the spacious hallway of the airport.

Saori slapped a hand to her forehead before sliding her fingers slowly down her face. “I swear to God, Jace… if you ask that one more time I will throttle you!”

Jace simply stuck his tongue out at Saori and with narrowed eyes the petite girl took the bait and hit Jace on the shoulder. The two started arguing in slightly heated voices and drew stares of the other people traveling.

“Alpha, shouldn’t you uh, stop them?” Adrian asked tentatively, looking towards the tall male.

“Why do I have to stop them? I’m not your guys’ dad,” Alpha retorted with a sigh. He swore he was the only one to ever step forever and deal with difficult situations. “Plus if she smacks him, Jace deserves it.”

“I-” Adrian stuttered.

Zera stepped forward and laid a comforting hand on Adrian’s shoulder. “Honestly, what did you expect, Adri? Let’s just all try to find the bed and breakfast okay?”

It was at those words that Rune stepped up, her finger jabbing at her phone as she tried to get directions. “I think I found the way we have to go, just a short subway ride after we claim our bags.”

Quinn pointed up to the right with their finger. “Baggage claim is that way.” They then stepped in between Saori and Jace and physically shoved the two apart. “Let’s just grab our bags and worry about all of this later, alright?”

Saori begrudgingly nodded, and pointedly moved herself away from Jace to walk next to Alpha instead. Jace simply shrugged, a mischievous smile on his face, “Aww, but it’s so much fun to mess with her though.”

Saori instantly narrowed her eyes in Jace’s direction. “Don’t.”

The tense atmosphere was broken by a cheerful call that came from Beenie, who had pulled away from the group at some point during the chaos. “Check it out guys! I found a cart for our bags.”

After that, it took some time with some more bickering here and there, but around an hour later, the group had gotten their luggage and strolled out into the streets of Tokyo. It had been a huge question as to whether this staff bonding trip was going to happen at all. With the restrictions on travel and safety precautions for health, it seemed like their planned visit to Japan would be canceled. It was honestly a bit of a miracle that the virus cases went down enough. But despite all odds, they were here and the eight staff were honestly looking forward to sightseeing and just spending time together as a group.

Rune and Saori took the lead in getting directions to the quaint house they had rented out in the suburbs not too far from the city. It had been cheaper to do a bed and breakfast rather than get shared hotel rooms and as the traditional Japanese house loomed before the group, it seemed like an even better decision.

The house had a sloped roof and sliding paper doors with a large stone garden out back. A small waterfall tumbled quietly into a small pond where koi fish swam freely.

“This is so beautiful!” Adrian exclaimed as he took in the view. The awed sounds from the rest of the staff echoing the male’s opinions.

“I call first dibs on choosing a room!” Rune exclaimed as she clambered towards the door to explore their new home for the next week and a half.

“Hey wait for us!” Zera called as she quickly ran after the other girl.

The house was decorated traditionally to match the architecture. Delicate vases and bonsai trees decorated the corners and ancient scrolls with detailed black calligraphy adorned the walls. Two of the bedrooms had a pair of katanas mounted in the wall. One set was of shorter delicate swords with silver handles and blue sheaths. The other set had gold handles and purple sheaths with an engraving in the blade.

Saori, Zera, Rune, Beenie, and Quinn all spent a long time staring at the purple katanas before all simultaneously wanting to claim the room. There were more squabbles and petty fights but eventually the rooms were all picked and the staff gathered in the main room to discuss what they wanted to do on their trip here. It was pretty early in the evening so anything they decided to do would be postponed to tomorrow.

“I still can’t believe I lost that race. I really wanted that room so badly.” Saori sighed, regret clear on her face. Rune had won the race with Zera winning second place so she took the other room with the blue katanas.

“Not sure what you expected with how short you are.” Alpha replied with a smirk.

Saori gasped in mock annoyance and huffed a sigh, “Sorry that my legs are just that much shorter than yours.”

Before the two could bicker even more the lights in the house flickered and went out. The room was plunged into darkness and complete silence.

“What the?” Quinn’s voice echoed throughout the space.

“Seriously? A power outage?” Rune’s voice questioned next.

A blinding white light shone through the space to illuminate Zera as she turned on her phone flashlight. “So uh, anyone know where the fuse box would be?”

Silence went throughout the room before Saori’s usual sigh could be heard. “Guess we split up and go look for it?”

Sounds of agreement were heard throughout the staff and after some awkward shuffling and turning on of phone flashlights the group split up to look for the fuse box.

Adrian walked down one of the many hallways for what seemed like the third time. The search for the fuse box had gone on for about twenty minutes and the house was still shrouded in darkness.

He turned into the fancy room that over half the staff had fought over. Adrian wasn’t sure why he decided to enter that room, maybe the stairs to the basement would be hidden somewhere or the fuse box would be in the closet for all he knew. Right as he turned into the room, the lights flickered back on.

“Ah, finally, someone found the-“ Adrian started to say, mostly just to himself in relief before he looked up from the ground to the wall in front of him.

A bloodcurdling scream left his lips and with his eyes rolling into the back of his head, the male promptly ed out and collapsed to the ground.

Pinned to the wall by the pair of purple katanas that she had ired so much was Saori. The blades were shoved up to the hilt in her chest. Her blood dripped down the wall but the lack of light in her shocked eyes was enough to confirm it. Saori was dead.
