Q: Why do betta fish change color?

A: Many betta fish have a gene called the “Jumping Gene”, mainly marble bettas. This gene only becomes noticeable when the Jumping Gene gets in the way of the gene expression. The gene expression is basically the colour on your fish. Many bettas tend to marble, from small colour changes on the fins, to looking like a completely different betta. Though, this gene tends to mostly be in koi and white betta fish. Here is an example of my betta Owen, who is currently marbling very slowly.

Light flashed into the tank, stirring Excalibur from his peaceful slumber. Excalibur wiggled out from his sleeping spot, his yellow tail swaying behind him as he explored his tank.

“Hmm..” Excalibur thought, staring out of the tank. Usually his mum would have fed him by now. He swished back in forth, looking for his precious food.

Excalibur sighed to himself, he must have slept through food time, again. Sleep was definitely not worth missing out on food. Food is precious.

As Excalibur made his way back to his hiding spot, his gaze focused on the Nitrite snail. To his horror, the snail was gobbling up his precious food! He felt himself starting to flare, how dare this tiny snail eat his food while he napped, disrespectful.

Excalibur lifted his nose up in a mocking manner and whipped towards the snail,”I am so telling Mum when she gets home!”

(Moral of the story: Don’t steal from your betta or he/she may snitch on you!)

Today we are interviewing: Ms. Toshinori

- How did you get into betta keeping? How long have you been keeping bettas?       

I got into betta keeping when my parents got me my first betta. I don’t even know when I got it, but I’ve always grown up with bettas.

- What bettas do you have now? Could we get some pictures of them?

- If you have multiple tanks, which tank scape is your favorite? Can we see pictures of that tank?

Hmm I loved Kingsley’s tank, but his decorations were ripping his tail, so I had to get rid of them. So I guess my favorite now is Ivory’s new tank. The schoolhouse is kind of random, but I wanted him to have something from his old tank in there.

- How did you learn to take such nice photos? What do you use to take the photos? Lastly, may we see your favorite photo you’ve taken so far?

My mom loves photography, so I kinda just learned from her. Honestly, I just use my phone camera. Also, one thing I’ve learned about bettas is that they are not very good models! This is my favorite photo:
