01. shows & characters
As of late, there have been many shows aimed towards kids that have featured both major and minor lgbt+ characters. While this isn’t ALL of the characters out there, here are just a few that I thought were very important!

Disney Channel’s show “Andi Mack” broke boundaries by being the first Disney show to feature a major LGBT+ character.
The story follows young teen Andi Mack and her close friends as they navigate their way through junior high school. It’s groundbreaking in the sense that it not only features a major lgbt+ character, but it tackles other topics such as anxiety, relationships, teen pregnancy, and much more in a family-friendly way. I think that this show is great for all ages, and it’s a good way to talk to younger teens about some of the issues that Andi faces as she tackles her teenage years with her friends.
The nice thing about this show is that it showcases an openly gay main character while presenting it in the same way they would present a straight character. It covers crushes, heartbreak, coming out, etc. by making it something that younger audiences can relate to.
This show is full of diverse characters and it tackles a variety of issues while keeping it easy for kids and young teens to understand. It’s a really great show and I would highly recommend it to anyone!

This Netflix remake of the original show “She-Ra” has become really popular! There has been a lot of buzz going on about it online, and I’m here to give you the scoop on all of the excitement!
One of the most exciting thing about this show is that it features multiple lgbt+ characters! I’m here to talk about the three most prominent so far.
In the first season, we are introduced to Adora and her life. The show follows Adora on her adventures as she tries to find her purpose in life and figure out for herself what she believes in. Along the way, we meet the princesses that form the princesses alliance. Two notable characters that I noticed right of the bat were Netossa and Spinnerella.
Netossa and Spinnerella are a lesbian couple that are a part of the princesses alliance. They’re both princesses who help Adora and her friends from time to time in fighting evil, etc. I think they are absolutely adorable! And, the show presents them like any other couple.

Another notable character in the show is Double Trouble. They are a non-binary character that is introduced in season 4. They’re quite the actor, and they’re known for putting on great performances when they shape-shift into other people.
It’s really nice to see not only a non-binary character but also a non-binary voice actor to play the character! I like being able to see my gender identity represented in the character they portray.
Over all, I really enjoy this show! I would highly recommend it!

02. why it matters
Just like there are straight couples represented in the media, it’s important for more lgbt+ couples and characters to be represented too. It’s hard growing up when people like you aren’t represented in the media.
I know for me growing up, it would have been nice to have a non-binary character to look up to. However, even though that wasn’t the case for me, it’s amazing to see it happening today!
Hopefully, as time goes on, it’ll become more of a normal thing to have characters of different sexualities and gender identities present in kids’ shows. Seeing these big companies like Dreamworks and Disney take steps like this to add more representation is amazing to see! And I hope that other major companies will soon follow suit.

She-Ra is SUCH a good show, I love the story, characters, and representation. I noticed Bow's dads weren't mentioned, they're pretty great too ^^
I think my favorite lgbt characters in a kid show and Clyde's dads and Luna Loud from the Loud House. They never focus on the characters being lgbt. They just are.It doesn't feel forced and that's what I like.
There is also the kid Mark from "The Conners" on ABC Tuesdays at 8pm.
Just saying
Double Trouble is, frankly, iconic.
Also like 90% of She Ra characters aren't straight and wow what a great show we stan
