Chinese New Year is a festival that celebrates the start of a new year, this, however, is not the same day as that most of the world celebrates it. They celebrate new year according to the traditional Chinese calendar or Lunar calendar. It’s also commonly referred to as the Spring festival as the spring season traditionally starts with the first of the twenty four solar , also called Lichun.

The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between the 21st of January and the 20th of February. This year the first day of the Chinese New Year was celebrated on the 25th of January, it being the year of the rat. Next year the first day of the Chinese New Year will be on the 12th of February, which will also be the year of the Ox.

According to legends, the beginning of the Chinese New Year started with a mythical beast called the Nian, this beast would eat villagers, mostly children in the middle of the night. One year, the villagers decided to hide from the best but before they could do this an old man appeared before them and said that he would stay the night and would get revenge on the Nian.

During the night the old man put up red papers and set off firecrackers, so when the villagers came back the next day and they saw the village hadn’t been destroyed they assumed that it was because the Nian was afraid of the color red and of loud noises. The tradition then grew to the villagers wearing red clothes, hanging up red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors and using fireworks to scare off the Nian when the new year was approaching.
