Life is an ephemeral flicker of flame, a matchbox fire in the murky dark
We spark for a moment, ignite with the taste of smoke and promises on our tongues
We’re told to drag ourselves through daybreak and nightfall until our match burns down and we are nothing but ash again
Ever ive, ever idle, ever watching the wolves play as the world flies by past our eyes
So we urge ourselves to stand against the wind, to sputter and strain and be a fault in the system
A firework in the midst of the starved glow of matches and burning newspaper
For what a shame it would be to the universe if we were to burn for nothing at all
