Top 7 Nyans

A week ago on the 22nd it was cat day in Japan. My favourite Japanese holiday right after pocky day! I wanted to do a top list but I couldn't get around to finishing it in time. And instead of waiting for a year I will post it now.

So, here are my 7 favourite Nyans! Other cat Yo-kai are good too, but this was hard enough as it is. There are so SO many of them...

[7] Libertynyan

Libertynyan is a weird Yo-kai. He was first introduced on a Comic Con medal and then in a July 4th event in Wibble Wobble. And that's where him and the variants he got later on stayed in forever, Wibble Wobble. And since this game got shut down a few years ago Libertynyan has disappeared with it.

The japanese side of the games has never acknowledged his existence which has put him in a very weird spot. Unless they someday do or the US gets another mobile game, which are both very unlikely, we won't see this guy again.

Design wise Libertynyan isn't anything exciting, he is Jibanyan dressed as the Statue of Liberty. This is a Yo-kai I like more for his weird history than anything else.

[6]Originyan

This is the point when Level-5 started to embrace and at the same time make fun of the abundance of cat clones they put into their games.

I always like character customization in video games, and Originyan is a perfect example of it. Throughout Yo-kai Watch 3 you can collect clothing and body parts and use the Build-a-Nyan app to shape your Originyan into anything you want. Getting the parts for it is annoying but playing around with the app is way more fun than it has any right to be.

By the way the best thing you can do with your Originyan is definitly this. Why would you ever do this.

[5]Chocobonyan

Chocobonyan is part of the Final Fantasy crossover in Yo-kai Watch 3, the other character in it being Mooglenyan. He is also the dumbest Nyan that has made it into the main games. It's Jibanyan riding a Chocobo. Why? Well I don't know, why not! They could have made Chocobo a standalone Yo-kai, but they are known for being ridable so they just slapped Jibanyan on it and called it a day. It's fantastic.

You befriend Chocobonyan through a race quest in New Yo-kai City and I just want to mention how hard it is. Chocobonyan is so fast oh my god, I've never been able to beat him.

[4]Momotaronyan

While I do really like Momotaronyan I don't want to put him higher because the whole reason I started liking him was because a friend did and we started to joke about it a lot. Still, I enjoy him in the anime and I've really come to appreciate his story with the Onis.

Even though I never got one for myself and am still accasionally trying to Momotaronyans moveset in Blasters is really fun. He is a tank but can also deal a lot of damage.

His design may look weird at first but it represents what he is based on well. Making their Momotaro a Nyan is an odd choice but it would have looked a lot more out of place if they had made him human-like.

[3]Shogunyan

I know this is a very boring and generic pick but Shogunyan is one of the most iconic cats in the series. For a lot of us he is THE legendary, and he is also the first one that got introduced. He was the first to be in the anime, the manga, the first one to get a medal and is usually the easiest one to get in the games.

Shogunyan together with Burly used to absolutely dominate the meta back in Yo-kai Watch 2. You couldn't go 2 online matches without coming across a combination of the two. Usually OP characters like that annoy me, but I used them too. They just were a lot of fun. And while not as good as in 2 Shogunyan is still a good pick in any of the other games.

Over the years he has gotten a lot of variants that are better designed and stronger than Shogunyan himself is, for example Last Nyanmurai and Goku Bushinyan. But I just can't help it but have a sweet spot in my heart for the original samurai cat.

[2]Sailornyan

Sailornyan was exclusive to the digital version of Fleshy Souls and since I am an avid Bony Spirits follower I never payed much attention to her at first. But while playing Blasters I needed a good healer and Sailornyan seemed like the best option at the time. She's a lot easier to get in that game though the use of boost coin qr codes.

I ended up really enjoying how she plays, she is one of my most used and highest leveled Yo-kai in that game. When I finally did get an Elder Bloom, the best helaer in that game, I couldn't get myself to replace my good old trusty friend who was lovingly nicknamed SET SAIL.

She's pink, a good Sailor Moon reference and one of the fewer Nyans that are female. And I always love some queens.

[1]Applenyan (Ringonyan)

You knew this was coming. And if you didn't, welcome to the world of apple stans, there are one of us!

The Fruitnyans were always my favourite sub category of Nyans. There's something about their design and concept that was always appealing to me, although I could never say one of them was a good character on it's own. My favourite from the originals is probably Strawbnyan. The choice of fruits used also seemed weird, why are there two Melons instead of more iconic fruits?

Anyway, that problem got fixed with a little help from the mobile game Yo-kai Watch World. You probably know it as the one that has too many variants in it that don't need to exist. But it also introduced three new Fruitnyans which was something I never thought we'd see.

The first of them was Ringonyan, or how I like to call him Applenyan. There is nothing too special about him, and no lore because he is just a mobile game variant, but I really love him. Apples are the most basic fruit, not my favourite but still good, and it just fits perfectly with the Fruitnyans.

Even though I have somehow managed to make this the longest paragraph there is not much to say about him. He's just a good apple boi. I will never give up hope of him, Pinenyan and Lemonyan making it into the main series games like they deserve one day.
