BTS’s “Map of the Soul: 7” spends a ninth week with a high ranking on the Billboard 200!

On the chart dated May 2, BTS’s latest album “Map of the Soul: 7” grabs the No. 33 spot. This is the ninth week that the album has spent on the chart, which ranks the most popular albums in the United States.

On the World Albums chart, “Map of the Soul: 7” remains at No. 1, now in its eighth week at the top and ninth overall on the chart.

The album takes No. 3 on the Independent Albums chart and No. 43 on the Canadian Billboard Albums chart. BTS has also risen to No. 7 from No. 10 last week on the Artist 100.

BTS’s most recent album Map of the Soul: 7 reigns as the bestselling title of the year in the U.S., and it turns out it isn’t a very close race. When streaming equivalents are included, the group’s latest doesn’t sit at No. 1, but it doesn’t fall very far either.

Looking solely at sales, it is clear that 2020 belongs to BTS, and there are a number of statistics below that highlight not just that Map of the Soul: 7 is the bestselling album of the year (at least so far), but that it doesn’t face any real competition for that title.

Outselling The Top Five Best-Performing Titles Combined

Map of the Soul: 7 sits in seventh place on the ranking of the best-performing albums of 2020, having moved just over 700,000 copies in the weeks it’s been available. That’s a huge sum for a short period of time, but it’s not close to a number of other releases…though those efforts haven’t sold nearly as well.

In fact, Map of the Soul: 7 has outsold the five best-performing albums in the U.S. this year combined. Those titles—Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, The Weeknd’s After Hours, Lil Uzi Vert’s Eternal Atake, Lil Baby’s My Turn and Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding—have all managed to actually sell 480,000 copies combined. That’s just shy of the 488,000 CDs and digital copies that BTS’s most recent chart-topper has pushed.

Outselling The Longest-Running No. 1 of 2020

Map of the Soul: 7 may be one of the biggest titles of 2020 and the bestselling album, but it only managed a single frame atop the Billboard 200 before starting its slow descent. While it didn’t get to hold onto the throne, it is still outselling the effort that has spent the most frames in charge of the all-genre list. The Weeknd’s After Hours ruled for four consecutive turns, but so far it has only been purchased 375,000 times. That puts BTS ahead by over 100,000 copies.

After Hours is also the second-bestselling album of 2020, and it still has a way to go before it catches up to Map of the Soul: 7.

Outselling The Best-Performing Album Of 2020

Looking at combined units (sales and streaming equivalents), Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial is the biggest album of 2020, though it may soon be ed by The Weeknd’s After Hours, which is not far behind. The rapper’s debut full-length has shifted 1.067 million equivalent units this year, though very few of those are pure sales. In fact, it has only actually sold 15,000 copies, a paltry sum for a title that’s performing so well.

That means that Map of the Soul: 7 is now outselling Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial 32 times over.

A quick note here that all the numbers above are based on figures published by HitsDailyDouble that come from BuzzAngle music, which monitors sales and streams in the U.S. The company is a competitor of Nielsen’s, which supplies data to Billboard for weekly rankings. While the numbers the two companies come up with are usually very close, they do differ sometimes.

For most artists, charting more than one album at once on any Billboard would be a huge win, and perhaps a signifier that they are at the top of their game, but for BTS, it’s nothing unusual. In fact, the group is used to occupying several spaces on a number of tallies simultaneously, and this time around they prove their immense and undeniable popularity on the ranking they have come to rule most often.

BTS current owns half of all the available spots on Billboard’s World Albums chart. That kind of dominance is rarely seen on any of the charting company’s lists, but amazingly, this isn’t the first time that the K-pop superstars have managed this feat, and it probably won’t be the last.

The group gains ground from last time around when they controlled one-third of the World Albums chart, but now they increase their ownership as two older titles return once again to the list, likely thanks to fans rushing to consume their full-lengths after the band’s Bang Bang Con online concert event.

BTS is steady at both Nos. 1 and 2, first with their latest release Map of the Soul: 7 and then with Love Yourself Answer, which keeps as the second-longest-charting Korean-language title in the history of the tally. Also a non-mover this frame is Map of the Soul: Persona, which is comfortable at No. 5.

Back on the World Albums chart after a break away is Wings, which re-enters the race at No. 6. Just three rungs down, Love Yourself: Tear rises one spot to No. 9, giving the seven-member vocal group and dancing phenomenons control over half of the top 10.

Last week, BTS World, the soundtrack the band released in 2019 as a soundtrack for their mobile game of the same name, charted at No. 14, and this turn it also pushes forward slightly, lifting to No. 13. At the very bottom of the World Albums chart at No. 15 comes Love Yourself: Her, which is also back after falling off the roster not long ago.
