C H A P T E R 2 : O U T O F W O R K
Emily laid on her back, spread across three chairs on the subway train, sleep deprived, stressed, and done with life. Last night kicked her ass, and she was feeling the aftermath of it. At last, the train stopped and arrived at her desired destination. She didn't hear the announcer call through the speaker as she had headphones on with music playing. She only noticed it was her stop last minute when she saw people leaving.
Emily hopped out of her seat and off the subway train. She rushed up the steps and entered the street of Inkopolis City. As expected on a normal Monday at mid-day. She ed down the street making sure to jump out of the way of bike riders and walk around construction sights on her way to her job.
Eventually, she arrived at the place she worked at, the now shut-down Clownfish Escapade. She saw her boss outside shaking her head.
"Claire, what's going on?"
"You would know if you answered your phone. We had the shut down temporarily due to an infection going around in the workplace."
She answered, taking off her hat, and revealing her short, dark-red hair.
"Infection? I feel fine!"
"I can see that!"
She responded, biting down on her pierced lips, showing her frustration.
"Lucas went home throwing up on Friday's shift, Jesse had a terrible stomach ache yesterday and also had to leave, and Ali caught a fever. Some of our customers also got sick after visiting us. Because of all this, we're shutting down for a month until whatever disease is going around gets taken care of."
"B-But Claire, it's summer! Schools had ended last week, well mostly, some Unis are still on for some reason, wouldn't the kids want to go somewhere to have fun durin' summer break?"
"Yeah Emily, they would! Luckily, there are a thousand other places in the city that they could go to. Besides, you have that other job, right? Maybe that can keep you occupied for a bit."
Emily thought to herself as Claire walked away. She got out her phone and rang up her boss.
"Hello?"
The boss answered.
"Hey Rachel, my day job has just been shut down due to an infection. Is there any way you could put up for a few more shifts for the next month, please?"
Emily asked.
"Oh Emily... I don't know how exactly to tell you this. Unfortunately, due to your lack of performance over the last few shifts, mainly on Saturday night, we've decided to let you go."
"What?! Why?!"
"Don't get me wrong, you're a good young woman and you have a lot of potential, but we can't have our employees crying in the kitchen for an hour during shifts. It's not a good look on us at all, and getting drunk and messing yourself also didn't help in the slightest. Someone mentioned it in a bad review."
"A bad review?! What did they say?"
Rachel cleared her throat as she read out the review.
"Place was good, partying was fun. But it was a bit jarring to see an employee disappear for an hour, then come back buying drinks, getting drunk, messing themselves, swearing at customers, and starting fights."
Each little detail made Emily cringe at herself.
"Right..."
"I hope you understand our choice. You're always welcome to stop by for a drink if you desire, but we can no longer hire you. Good day, and I hope things go well at the arcade."
She said before hanging up the phone, leaving Emily speechless.
Emily felt the strong urge to break down crying. However, she instead thought of yet another solution. One day bothered someone else, but at least she would be happy with herself.

It was the last week at Uni, and the second last day. Magnus was in class and sat next to Denis. He wore a peach-colored apron and black gloves, as did the rest of the students. In addition, Magnus had also put cream on his scar to make it more faded.
Mid-way through the current lecture, Emily began spam-calling him.
"Lang, is something the matter?"
"No, it's just Emily. She's spam callin' again."
Magnus answered.
"Oh Emily!"
"Bloody Emily!"
"Can she just not?"
"Magnus, can I have her number?"
Everyone glared at the last student to make a comment, who lightly giggled.
"Put her on speaker, let's hear what she has to say."
The teacher suggested.
"But Dave, I-"
Magnus panicked. The teacher looked at him and raised an eyebrow, causing Magnus to groan before finally answering the call.
"Emily, I'm in class right now. What do you want?"
"I'm out of work..."
She moaned, stretching out the last word. Her moaning was amusing to the class.
Magnus sighed quietly to himself, rolling his eyes.
"What happened?"
"The arcade shut down because of an infection and I got fired from the club."
"Honestly Emily, you're better off away from clubs at the moment."
Magnus said, making his classmates laugh more.
"I'm afraid to ask, but what are you doing now?"
"I'm at the park swinging on the swings. I'm bored. When do you leave Uni?"
"I literally have an hour and a half left, give me some time."
"Can I meet after the lesson? I need someone to vent my frustrations out to."
Magnus' eyes rolled to the back of his head, silently mumbling to himself. He sighed once again before answering her.
"Yeah, sure."
"Yay! Something to do!"
Emily exclaimed.
"Love you!"
"Love you too..."
Magnus said whilst questioning his life choices. The moment he hung up the phone, he hid his head in his arms and screamed into them.
L A T E R T H A T A F T E R N O O N . . .
Magnus walked out of the engineering block at the Calamari University of Inkopolis. Holding hands with Denis. Magnus saw Emily sitting against the wall in the building opposite. She was on her phone.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
Magnus said, kissing Denis' brown cheek before greeting Emily.
So... Mitchell's?"
For the first time all day, Emily smiled. Jumping up on the offer of going to one of her favorite restaurants with her best friend.
1 0 M I N U T E S L A T E R . . .
"And then Rachel just decided to fire me without any notice! This all sucks! My life sucks!"
Emily vented to Magnus, who was still taking in ten minutes' worth of information from her all in one sitting.
The pair of them sat by the window opposite each other on the soft, puffy seats.
"Wow... that was a lot to take it."
Magnus exhaled, already sounding exhausted.
"Have you tried thinking about why it is she made that decision in the first place? I mean, do you even what you did last time you were there?"
"Yeah, I had really bad Diarrhea... in my work clothes... and you cleaned me."
"Yeah, not to mention the fact that you stunk the place up and made a mess on the floor. Emily, I hate to sound like an asshole to you, but maybe it was for the best that they let you go."
Magnus suggested.
"Besides, more free time means more time to be productive. Maybe you can use this time to build your reputation through your Splat Force duties. Just a suggestion."
"Ah yes, because Splat Force duties worked so well last night!"
"Look, you made a mistake, it happens! I've made mistakes, Commander Allen made mistakes, Commander Frida made mistakes, and although I never met him, I know that Commander Evans made his fair share of mistakes too. Nobody is perfect, and that's fine!"
Magnus reassured, once again having to stop Emily from entering her crisis mode to avoid another long vent, and just so she could actually feel good about herself.
"You're a mess, Emily, I'm sorry but you are. But you can clean up your mess by learnin' and improvin', that's what I did, maybe you can do it too!"
Emily scoffed and stared at the table. She began to fidget with the corner of the menu, flicking it, pulling it. She wouldn't let her hands off of it. At last, the waiter arrived.
"Good afternoon! Welcome to Mitchell's! How may I serve you."
"This one's on me. One coffee, please!"
Magnus announced whilst turning to the now excited Emily and smiling. Good idea in concept. The aftermath on the other hand?
5 M I N U T E S L A T E R . . .
Magnus and a now hyper Emily walked out of the restaurant.
"AND THEN HE GOES UP TO HER AND SAYS 'HEY GIRL, YOU'RE HUGE!' AND THEN SHE'S ALL LIKE, 'SCREW YOU!' AND THEN BAM! RIGHT IN HIS FACE! AWW, THAT WAS SUCH A FUNNY SCENE I LOVED IT!"
"Well I'm glad you enjoyed our movie night last Thursday!"
He said, cringing from how loud she was being.
"That coffee really affected you're system, huh? Are you gonna be like this on the subway?"
"ARE YOU KIDDIN'?! I FEEL SO ALIVE RIGHT NOW!"
She screamed as the pair of them walked down the stairs and into the subway station.
N O T L O N G A F T E R . . .
On the subway, Emily had fallen asleep on Magnus' lap. Wanting to be gentle with her, Magnus' stroked her hair whilst leaving a voice note to her mother.
"Hey Kyle, Emily just had some coffee, and you know she is with caffeine. She's fast asleep right now. I'll drop her off!"
After ending the voice note, Magnus put his phone back in his pocket before putting his full attention on Emily, giving her the greatest back rubs that anyone could dream of getting. They made her smile in giggle in her sleep.
M E A N W H I L E W I T H S H A U N A . . .
Inkopolis Cathedral, a place full of drastic events. First, the final battle in the gifted wars took place there, then the gifted climbed out of the sewers and caused a massive crater near there, whilst also destroying the place. For a place of peace, the Cathedral never caught a break.
Shauna was hiding in the corner by the door, her ski mask was off but she still wore the black robes. She was staring at the ground, head down, not wanting anyone to look in her direction, not wanting them to see her face.
Through the glances she made to see the citizens of Inkopolis, she saw them all happy, looking physically normal without sanitized patches, without looking like a creep, a weirdo.
She saw couples on heartwarming dates, something she wished she could experience once more. Instead, she never felt anything. She felt nothing. She had nothing. She was nothing to the world.
Shauna glanced at her reflection in a puddle and began to cry. She wished that she could go around and ask for help, she wished that she had someone to turn to, to cry to. But the only person Shauna had to herself, was herself. And that was a horrid feeling.
B A C K W I T H E M I L Y . . .
Emily woke up, now in the comfort of her bed.
"What th- how did I get here?!"
She exclaimed. She leaned up and looked around before seeing her Splat Force gear on the end of her bed with a paper note next to it.
'Go out and make a difference!
-Magnus'
Of course, she fell asleep on Magnus' arm. Of course, he'd bring her home again. She climbed out of bed and picked up her gear.
"Eh... it's not like I'm occupied anyways."
She thought out loud before getting changed into her gear.
D U R I N G T H E E V E N I N G . . .
Being back in the Splat Force suit instantly gave Emily the motivation she needed to finally get out there and do some good, which was the very thing she needed. She was super jumping from rooftop to rooftop, the summer breeze felt amazing on her skin.
She looked down on the streets, did a few work-out stretches, before she went and took care of crime. Purse snatcher? Emily went down and stopped him in his tracks. Gang fight? She'd throw down a Splat Bomb to stop the fight and then throw punches at them. An old woman? She'd gently hold her hand and guide her across the road to the local shop.
"Thank you, sweetheart..."
The old woman thanked.
"Yeah, no problem!"
Emily replied, skipping down the street feeling satisfied.
Another purse snatcher? She'd swoop in and punch his face. Another gang fight? She'd throw another bomb down, stop the fight and throw punches. Another gang fight? She'd do the same. Another purse snatcher? Stopped! Another gang fight? Stopped! A break-in? Stopped!
From what started as a fun little side hobby became repetitive. She didn't know how Magnus did it, or any previous Splat Force member who came before her, though she couldn't turn to any of them due to them being mostly dead. All she had was Magnus' word from the cafe. She hoped for some new activity. Maybe an update on the gang from the Fisk Gala? That would be at least somewhat interesting to her.
B A C K W I T H S H A U N A . . .
Still by the cathedral, Shauna was forcefully approached by three thugs, all of which were grown, muscular men in leather jackets.
"Hey, you're one of those mask freaks from the Fisk Gala!"
The leader in the middle greeted. The scared Shauna refused to look up at him in fear of what he would do when he saw her.
"Hey, eyes are up here, lady!"
Still not getting no response, the leader turned to his group.
"Marco, point here in the right direction, will ya?"
He asked his henchman, he kneeled before her, grabbed her head, and forced it upwards, showing off her face to the men, who all started to laugh at her.
"Wow, aren't you just hideous!"
S L A M ! ! !
Marco was knocked out by a large stone that was thrown at his head. The two other gang looked to their right and saw Emily standing menacingly, or so she thought.
"You just made your last mistake, bitch!"
The leader said, grabbing his pocket knife and charging at Emily.
The leader proved to be a fast opponent for Emily, swinging his knife at her at overwhelming speeds, eventually landing a cut on the arm, causing her to groan in pain.
"Is that all you got?"
He asked with a crooked smirk.
S L A M , S L A M ! ! !
Emily landed a kick to the leader's knee, knocking him onto it before landing a punch to the face, knocking him out. Seeing Emily's fury from afar, the other gang member ran away.
"Nope! Nope!"
He mumbled the same word until he was out of her view.
Shauna recognized Emily from the Fisk Gala. The two locked eyes. After glancing at her robes, it then hit Emily as well.
"Y-You were at the Gala!"
Emily muttered. In a panic, Shauna sprinted away.
"Wait!"
Shauna sprinted down the road, constantly glancing back to see Emily getting closer with every step. She made a right turn into an ally way, but it was a dead end. She fell to her knees on top of a manhole cover, crying.
"Please don't hurt me! I-I didn't want any of it!"
Emily kneeled in front of her, gently pressing her chin and moving her head upwards. Of course, Emily was taken aback by Shauna's appearance, but she knew that with a member of the gang being in a horrid state like her, there must've been a bigger story.
"Who are you?"

T H X F O R R E A D I N G ! ! !
Thx for reading the second Chapter of Emmie: A Splat Force Story! I hope you enjoyed this double Chapter premiere! Next week will go back to the familiar one Chapter per week formula since I don't think I can do two Chapters per week forever, or else I'll explode. Now, the two stories have collided with Emily now being stuck in the middle of an even bigger story, so stay tuned for that! Until next time, stay safe out there! ^^
