Murder on the Orient Express

by: Agatha Christie

Murder on the Orient Express is a mystery

novel about the death of a person named Mr.

Ratchett. Hercule Poirot, is an investigator

who just so happened to be on the Orient

express when he died. Hercule Poirot and

his friend Monsieur Bouc then try to solve

who the murderer is. With every chapter, it

gets more and more exciting! This is pers-

onally one of my favorite books. No matter

how many times I reread a part, or parts, I

could never figure out who it was that had

killed him. Everything is just a surprise and

the way it is written makes it feel as if you

are actually there. Through out the book it

leads you on to suspect people and then

no longer suspect that person. It is carefully

written so at to not spoil the end. I read this

book along with a couple of my other friends,

and none of us could figure it out. Nothing is

too obvious, and the ending is just spectac-

ular. The ending leaves you with a satisfied

taste and a feeling of peace, for you now

know who it is. Everything suddenly comes

together and it's just beautiful. The characters

all have such distinct personalities. They all

stand out against the rest and they are all well

written. You can really feel their emotions and

how they react whilst reading it, and that in

itself is praise worthy. Over all, I think Murder

on the Orient Express is an amazing book, and

isn't praised enough.

Topic: sentence length variation.

When creating a written piece,

regardless of the length or type,

you want to keep in mind how

you structure your sentences

and paragraphs to get your

point across. Short and long

sentences read differently even

if the topic is exactly the same.

Lets see an example:

▾ Phrasing 1: He was scared. His

heart was beating fast. Sweat

dripped down his face. His pupils

dilated. He crouched in his hiding

spot hoping not to be found.

▾ Phrasing 2: His breathing

increased to a huff, his heart

pumped thick blood in his veins

faster and harder, sweat covered

his face and fell in rivets. His

pupils grew large, taking in the

darkness surrounding him in his

small hiding spot. He couldn’t be

found…. Not now.

In Phrasing 1, the wording is

choppy and sporadic, making

your brain read it much faster

and sometimes even jumping

from word to word. You don’t

slow down until the last part,

because of the longer sentence.

This short quick phrasing lets

the reader see the action in a

fast paced scene. It reads as

fast action and quickly builds

tension instead of slow building

tension. In Phrasing 2, you get

the opposite. The wording is long

and languid. It allows your brain

to feel the words and emotions

that are depicted by them. The

longer sentences dramatize and

build the scene slowly, showing

the reader details and mounting

tension over time.

When writing a piece, you

definitely want to consider what

it is you’re wanting your reader to

see, how fast you want it to be

seen and felt, and structure your

sentences accordingly. It can truly

make or break a piece.

Cranberries

The red tart berries that adorn

our holiday meal tables.

Also when dried known as craisins.

Frankly. I don’t really love cranberries,

but I did wonder where they came from.

Apparently like most indigenous people,

they used natural resources for every-

thing in their daily lives, cranberries for

instance were used as clothing dye, and

food of course. If any of you have seen

the cranberry red color it is quite beaut-

iful, and is probably where the traditional

color that adorns red and green decor for

Christmas. Whether or not you enjoy the

taste of cranberries I think always depends

on a person's taste, I believe kids usually

don’t like it because they believe it isn’t

very sweet, which is true if your mom

bought the reduced sugar can of cranberry

sauce. Out of all of this I am enamoured

with the color, because it’s a complimentary

color, no matter what your skin tone is,

cranberry colored clothing is a perfect

statement color for that night in with your

roommates or family during the holidays.

I would pair it with a neutral or grey toned

color. Of everything that came out of the

holidays, I think that cranberries are

underappreciated and I hope this brings a

new old light to them. Hope you all stay

safe and socially distanced the rest of this

year, bless!

Song: Run Away- Ben Platt

Atypical from the way these are usually

done, I’m going to break these up by

verse and bridge. This is a story based

song so if broken up by line, it wouldn’t

quite make sense. Without further ado,

let's jump in. Italics are lyrics, bold is

my commentary.

They met at school, that's how it goes

Some drinks and then a rose

Then plans to meet again

He wrote her poems, songs, and prose

She knew that he'd propose

She only wondered when

One night, before they went to bed

He kneeled on both knees

And this is what he said

"I may not be wise

And I won't save the day

But look in my eyes

And know I'll always stay

And I won't run away

I won't run away"

In this first verse, Ben opens us with

a love story, as this is a ballad and

very appropriate, and instantly we

are drawn in and this tugs at the

heart. The way he wrote this you can

see the story playing out in your mind

and its very beautiful. The promise

made from the male to the female is

sweet, full of comion, and extrem-

ely loving. On my first listen through, I

cried, showed my husband, and we

decided at that moment that this song

would be played at our wedding.

Some years went by, they had a child

He was funny, strange, and mild

Their love for him ran deep

Some nights, his dreams would drive him wild

So into bed, she piled

To help him fall asleep

One night, he couldn't get to bed

So she kneeled on both knees

And this is what she said

"I may not be wise

And I won't save the day

But look in my eyes

And know I'll always stay

And I won't run away

I won't run away"

This second verse continues the story,

and we understand that this couple are

now married and parents. The mother

teaches their son the same thing her

husband promised her, that they won’t

run or leave him. Even if they aren’t

perfect, they will always love him and

be by his side. It's really a beautiful

message that I hope to impart to my

own son as he gets older.

You say it's safer on your own

You'd rather sleep alone

Than grow to need me there

But I hope now you can see

What my mom and dad showed me

I'm not going anywhere

I love you more and more each day

To love is not to leave

So, hear me when I say

"I may not be wise

And I won't save the day

But look in my eyes

And know I'll always stay

And I won't run away"

I won't run away

The third verse reveals this story as a

personal one and Ben is the son from

verse two. He’s retelling the story of

his parents to his chosen love. He

uses this beautiful love between them

and his upbringing to show his love

for them, to show them he intends to

be by their side. This story is just all

in all beautiful. Leaves me in tears

each time.

When you begin to writing you

should try to stick to shorter

paragraphs. They should be

very direct and to the point.

By this, you don't run the risk

of making run on paragraphs.

You want to separate topics

with your paragraphs. For

example, if you are writing

about a characters backstory,

piece your information by

events or in your paragraph

or facts in one. Either way,

you should also change the

paragraph of dialogue every

time a new person speaks.
