(Reuters) - Popular South Korean band BTS donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter (BLM) in of U.S. protests against police brutality, its music label, Big Hit Entertainment, told Reuters on Sunday.

On Thursday, the seven-member BTS wrote on its Twitter that they are against racism and violence with the hashtag BlackLivesMatter:

"We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together."

The hashtag went viral among the K-pop group's fans and started another wave of donations with a new hashtag, MatchAMillion.

The movement encouraged BTS' fan base, known as ARMY, an acronym for Adorable Representative MC for Youth, to match the $1 million donation the group made.

One Twitter said, "ARMYs, let's #BlackLivesMatter!"

The boyband suspended their world tour over coronavirus concerns in April.

The rolling, global protests reflect rising anger over police treatment of ethnic minorities, sparked by the May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis after a white officer detaining him knelt on his neck.

One day after K-pop fans around the world took over the White Lives Matter hashtag on Twitter to share montage videos of their favorite artists (known as "fan-cams" in the K-pop community), BTS tweeted their for the Black Lives Matter movement. On Thursday, the septet tweeted, "We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together. #BlackLivesMatter."

As one of the world's most popular K-pop groups, BTS has an impressive reach. Their message went out to their 26 million followers, and was available in both English and Korean. In addition to tweeting their , The Korea Herald reported that the group will be donating to an anti-racist activist organization, although the name of the group was not revealed.

Meanwhile, BTS fans have been showing their for the Black community since the death of George Floyd on May 25. The band's fans, known as the ARMY, made #WeLoveYouBlackArmy trend on Twitter, and circulated petitions to end police brutality. Additionally, a charity group started by BTS fans, One in an Army, has been sharing resources on how to get involved with the Black Lives Matter movement and donate to relevant charities on Twitter.

On May 28, the fan group tweeted, "We hear #BlackLivesMatter advocacy." The tweet was accompanied by a comprehensive collection of resources.

BTS' message of , along with their fans' commitment to sharing resources, is just one more way the K-pop fandom as a whole has stepped up in the fight against racial inequality and police brutality. After taking over the White Lives Matter hashtag in order to drown out the voices of white supremacists on June 3, the fandom has taken on the All Lives Matter hashtag, too. Their efforts are making social media a more inclusive space by not allowing messages of hate to be easily disseminated on Twitter during this pivotal moment in history.

Through the sharing of performance videos and memes, the K-pop fandom has found a unique way to lend their to the Black Lives Matter Movement. And now that BTS has tweeted their own message of solidarity, it's easy to see why their fans are such a ionate and proactive community.

BTS member Suga, this week operating under his alter ego Agust D (which he has used when releasing both of his solo mixtapes) is back on the Billboard charts without his bandmates with his semi-surprise new full-length D-2. The set, a 10-track mixtape, opens at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Album Sales ranking, which lists in order the bestselling albums in the country (which is different from the main albums list, which combines pure sales with streaming and track sale equivalents) thanks to just over 14,000 sales.

Making it to the runner-up rung is a big deal for Suga, as it’s a height no other solo South Korean musician has reached before (and only a handful of groups from the country have made it to that point), but that’s not the only way in which the rapper, singer, songwriter and producer has made history with his latest release.

D-2 is Suga’s (or Agust D’s, according to the name credited on the chart) second title to reach the 100-spot Top Album Sales chart, which is something that no other Korean soloist has managed before. In fact, only a handful of names operating on their own have managed to reach the list even once, so it’s not shocking that Suga is the first to place more than a single title on the tally.

Suga first reached the Top Album Sales chart with his debut solo mixtape Agust D, a self-titled effort. That project wasn’t a massive success on the list, as it only rose as high as No. 74 and it only managed to hold on for one frame. At the time, his accomplishment was still impressive, as he was just the third solo South Korean musician to appear on the tally.

Only half a dozen South Korean artists releasing music on their own have reached the Top Album Sales chart in the U.S., and three of them are of BTS. In addition to Suga, his bandmates RM and J-Hope have also sent solo mixtapes to the tally.

At some point in the coming years, another solo South Korean artist will surely match Suga’s feat, and it will likely be one of his fellow BTS , as they not only appear to be the most active of the bunch mentioned above, but they have the star power and the clout to score a bestselling album whenever they deliver something new.

Suga, perhaps best known as one of the seven of the K-pop group BTS, finally delivered his sophomore mixtape D-2 to his millions of fans on Friday, May 22 after teasing that something special was on its way for weeks. After its first full frame of availability, the title, his second on his own (and his second under his Agust D alter ego), lands some pretty impressive starting positions on a number of Billboard charts, including one that sadly rarely features Asian artists.

D-2 launches at No. 9 on the Top Rap Albums chart, which ranks the most popular full-lengths in the rap field. The set opens between Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding and Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, two of the most successful efforts this year, and it is one of only two new releases inside the uppermost region (Gunna’s Wunna kicks off in first place). Suga’s sophomore solo release begins with a little more than 14,000 pure sales, an impressive sum for a project performed in a language that isn’t English.

Suga is now the first South Korean musician to snag a top 10 title on the Top Rap Albums chart, which means he has earned himself yet another spot in the history books. Before this week, the highest an artist from his home country had climbed was No. 19, a slot G-Dragon managed to hit with his 2013 title Coup d'Etat Pt. 1.

Surprisingly, Suga’s D-2 is also the first effort from a musician from the Asian country to reach the competitive tally in four years.

Suga launched his career as Agust D back in 2016 with a self-titled mixtape, and while it did appear on a handful of Billboard charts at one point or another (including the World Albums and Top Album Sales tallies), it didn’t make it to the Top Rap Albums ranking. That genre-specific list only features 25 spots, so it has been more difficult for many South Korean artists to move enough units in a single frame to carve out space.

As his new mixtape (released under his Agust D moniker) D-2 appears on a number of Billboard charts, the collection’s focus track “Daechwita” also immediately makes an impressive and important impact on a number of rankings, proving itself to be not just the most popular cut on the 10-song project, but a true hit in many respects.

“Daechwita” debuts on this week’s Hot 100 at No. 76, and while that might not immediately sound like a particularly impressive placement on the roster, it’s historically significant for the musician behind the tune.

Suga’s new hit is now the fourth-highest-charting single by a South Korean soloist in the history of the Hot 100, which has now stood as the most important songs ranking in the U.S. for well over half a century.

Before this week, fellow BTS member J-Hope claimed the fourth-highest-charting single by a South Korean soloist in the history of the Hot 100, but now his biggest hit on his own has been pushed to fifth by his bandmate. Last year, he teamed up with Latin pop star Becky G for “Chicken Noodle Soup,” which made it all the way to No. 81 for a turn before falling down the tally.

While “Daechwita” did perform well on streaming platforms and its official music video was able to rack up millions of plays in the first several days it was available to watch, it’s sales that do most of the work when it comes to its historic position. The tune sold over 17,000 copies, which is enough to make it the second-bestselling track in the country this week. Sales factor into where tunes place on the Hot 100, as do radio play figures and streams.
