knights in shining armor - phanfic club

hi hi! so this is my fic for the phanfic club's genre challenge, and the genre i chose was fantasy, which i never usually write in. i think what i tried to do here is obvious, so i'll just get right into the fic :eyes:

dan and phil both stood in front of the castle gates on opposite sides, continuously scanning the area for any possible enemies they would need to take down before they could get through the gates. the two of them were quite new knights, tasked with guarding the castle from the knights of the kingdom next door to them. through the entire knighting process they had become rather good friends, and the bond they shared kept them sane enough.

dan glanced around the area again, his gaze landing on phil. "see anything?"

"nope. nothing," phil muttered, pursing his lips and looking around one last time before putting his sword down and relaxing against the gate just a bit. "desolate as fuck, this place is."

"tell me about it."

the two of them continued to stand in silence in the same positions for who knows how long, absolutely nothing happening that they needed to take care of. phil had questioned the necessity of this job a couple times throughout the shift.

and then something finally happened.

"phil, phil look-"

phil's head shot up and he immediately saw king wilbur of the opposing kingdom. a sudden wave of fear and intimidation came over phil, and the same happened to dan, even though the younger knight didn't show it.

"good day," phil stuttered out, "what brings you to our fine kingdom?"

"i'd like to speak with your king," king wilbur requested, his sly gaze travelling from dan to phil and back again.

"right this way," dan motioned for king wilbur to follow, and he led the king into the castle, disappearing behind the gates. phil was left by himself in front of the castle, undoubtedly scared from just being in king wilbur's presence. he had always heard rumors that the king was quite intimidating, and they definitely weren't wrong.

a few more minutes ed before phil heard someone yelling from a far distance from where he was. and then tons of soldiers from king wilbur's kingdom came filing over, holding varieties of weapons and other shit that could be used to attack. oh fuck.

phil ran inside the gates and locked them once he was in, hoping that would keep them out for long enough. he ran into the castle and made his way up to the king's quarters, and never would he guess what he was about to see. his king held at swordpoint by king wilbur. he should've known– king wilbur tricked him and dan into letting him in, and distracted the king so his soldiers could make their way here. he had never felt more gullible in his life, and the sudden guilt of the downfall of his kingdom was weighed on his shoulders.

and then dan jumped in with his sword and blindly slashed at king wilbur, fortunately slitting his throat and allowing their king to break free. "send out the army," dan called out to the king, and the king nodded and did just that. phil had been standing in the doorway throughout this entire thing, too scared and mentally paralyzed to move or do anything. but as he realized this was his chance, he ran back to the castle entrance and assisted his kingdom's army in taking down now-deceased king wilbur's soldiers.

they ended up winning, phil and dan ultimately being awarded for their brave efforts to save their kingdom. the opposing kingdom never attacked them again, and dan and phil prospered for many years after.
