Within the Depths of Ghostly Visions

“Why are we even here, Dan?” A girl no older than 14 asks, her voice slightly shaking in the cold breeze.

The boy turns to look at her. His smile widening as he looks behind him, the girl, to the wide and vase forest encoming the old and ruined castle.

“This used to be our families estate!” He response excitedly, eager to see what awaits them. What tales of old, of family trees, and portraits!

“I don’t like the feeling this castle gives off. It’s like I can hear it screaming from deep within, feel more actually.”

“Oh, come on! You’ve always had an overactive imagination. that time when you thought a beast was in the lake behind the house? All it was, was some large fish making some big bubbles!”

The girl scowls, angry for a moment. Before she sighs, her hands nervously twisting around one another.

“You know what mom says! We have seer’s blood in our family! It makes us more sensitive to the supernatural! I’m serious Danny, something terrible happened here.”

Dan turns back towards the castle, his heart beating within his chest very loudly.

“I feel like I need to go, it’s like it’s calling. Besides I don’t feel anything off.” He reasons, slowly making towards the old stone bridge.

The girl huffs, annoyed and confused on what to do.

“You never feel anything is off.” She mumbles, watching her brother go. “Besides mom says it’s stronger in the female line anyways.....” She crosses her arms, hastily making after her brother.

The once filled moat now lays dry as the sibling make their way across the old, cracked, and worn bridge. Old carvings, and symbols cover the posts and rails.

Track marks worn into the stone over many years is still visible. The girl has visions almost of what this must have been like back in the mighty empire. Of how people must have flocked and traveled from far and wide only to trade goods here.

She suddenly wonders though how many people must have died to make such a negative energy emit from this structure. Her body shivers, her hands suddenly feeling ice cold.

Her brother races forward, empowered by the grander of the bridge and how important his family must have been. His heart races with excitement, and anticipation as he reaches the broken gate. His hands pausing to feel the old great oak and twisted metal of the shattered gates.

How impressive these must have been! How many enemies would it have taken to break these down? He wonders in amazement.

His sister lags behind, her chest growing heavy, as she views the door. How many foes would it have taken to break these doors down? How many people waited in fear of what was going to happen to them?

They both make their way into the courtyard. The vegetation overgrown and strangling everything that once would have been beautiful and elegant.

The girl freezes, her hands beginning to tingle as if electricity is being ed through them. Her face contorts until she holds out her hand, the tingling turning into a sharp pain. Like knives.

“Daniel!” She yells, her eyes beginning to watering. “We need to go, now!” She begs, as her brother continues forward.

“Just a moment.” He reasons, his feet moving as if by their own accord. He stares in amazement at the grand arching entrance of the castle.

Aria, slowly starts to kneel, her hands clutched into tight fists. She watches as hands emerge from the ground around her, skeletal and ivory. They reach towards them, and she screams out. One touches her foot, as it sends a flurry of images to her mind.

Of starvation, of pain and desperation, but most of all hate towards the Gaul line. She stands up suddenly, dizzy and dazed. Her heart racing as she knows she must leave. She lifts her head, trying to keep her balance as she see’s the castle doors close behind her brother.

Dan turns at the movement, but feels no real fear. He pauses though, as ruins of the entrance hall change and morph around him. The bits of dust, and mould disappear. Swirling up and around as they form into nightly banners. The old pile of rotten wood and other questionable materials, changing and reforming into a might throne. A smaller seat appears, a lady coming to sit in it as she smiles at the boy.

“Once, another Gaul used to sit in this throne. He ruled with an iron first, cold hearted and calculated. Yet, he loved us creatures of the woods. I often venture into his room when he was alone, enticed by his manners. He was so cold, yet so loving.” The women speaks, calmly. Her greenish hair flowing around as if caught in a breeze. Her crown of golden and blue flowers entangled delicately in her leaf green hair. Her dress flows from her shoulders, making her look as shapeless as water.

“Dan! Danial! We need to go, please Danial!” His sister screams, muffled behind the great doors.

He turns to look, his feet suddenly feeling the urge to run as fast as he can. He can hear his sister pounding against the it, other voices ing with her screams.

“I think I should be going, you have a beautiful and mighty castle, I might say.” He reasons slowly, turning back to the seer woman. Her hair has fallen out, revealing her ivory white skull beneath. Her fair skin as rotten away from her once plush lips. Her dress lays in tatters on her body, revealing her skeleton underneath.

“What do you mean?” She sweetly asks, her features contorting into a grimace of a smile. “You’re the first male heir in over one thousand years..... It’s time we get our revenge for what he did to us.” She purrs, something making a deep gurgling noise in her throat.

Dan, starts to back up, his heart suddenly knowing what happened here. He now knows what Aria was talking about. What she felt. That mother was right to stay away from the castle, especially him.

“My sister.....” He whispers softly, looking towards the door. Her screams gone silent.

The lady slowly stands, her bones clicking against one another.

“We have no quail with the female heir, her ancestor was kind to us as William hunted us down. He finally found me though, his desire too strong, for he wanted the seer’s to help him. I loved him for a time, when he was young and curious. So beautiful, like a newly bloomed flower.” She explains, gently gliding towards the boy. His back hits the hard mahogany wood, the iron bolts cold against his skin.

“You may very well be my descendant, but you look and act all the more like him.” She hisses, her hands within feet of him. “I promised him that I would get my revenge on the one thing he always wanted.” She pauses suddenly, looking to the door behind him.

“What?” He chokes out. Scared for his sister.

She turns back to him suddenly, a serine smile playing across her rotten features.

“You’re sister is just like her.... So kind and pure. Scared as a rat, but she puts us to peace.” The lady whispers, her breath smelling like death.

“Mother always said that.” The boy agrees, quietly. He can hear her soft voice behind him, as she talks to those that have died. He closes his eyes, trying to calm himself.

“I’m afraid though that my hate runs too deep. I promised William I would take that which he valued most, a male heir.” She states, her hands reaching the boys shoulders. Clutching them hard, so the tips of her skeletal fingers dig into his shoulder blades painfully.

“How so?” He asks, fearing the answer. The lady pushing her face closer to his, whispering in his ear gently.

“Do you know where the children of the forest go?” She asks, her warm breath tickling his ear. He has no answer so she continues. “I promised him, I would never let his heir see the light of day as he pushed that dagger into my heart.” She hisses, her broken and missing teeth making soft clicking noises.

The boy swallows, his eyes squeezing tighter together. His heart slows, as he realizes what it means.

The girl turns her head as she hears him scream out. Her efforts to calm the dead forgotten as she races towards the castle doors.

She rams into them, sending a spasm of pain up her arm. She pushes with all her might, until the door pushes open enough that she can squeeze through.

Her heart pounding as she views the old and deserted entrance hall. Her brother no where in sight, she races forward foolishly hoping he is just hiding. That this was all a prank, her overly active imagination all along.

“It’s useless child.” A voice softly booms. His voice filled with melancholy. “She took the one thing I desired. The one thing she would not hand over to me. I loved all that was mystical, until she left me that day. I would not let them take her back, she would not win this time.” The voice echoes out.

The girl starts to cry, her arms coming up to hug herself.

“Go home child. She has won. Go and tell your mother that William Gaul’s mistake has been resolved. That there will be no male heir for another thousand years.”

Aria, slowly falls to the ground. Her nails digging into herself. Her head falling to her chest as she begins to sob uncontrollably.

A figure looms in the distance behind her. Racing towards the castle, their feet clumsily finding flat ground as they try to get to their children in time. The cold autumn breeze blowing through their hair as they feel what their daughter does. The dead have risen, and the one they feared for most is gone. Her mother falls short, her pained screams echoing out into the vast forest.

Fin.
