which are side stories of the main story.
Daddy J
“I’d like to know something.” Guang Hong looked at JJ. “What?” “Why do people call you ’Daddy J’? I mean your real name is Jean-Jacques right? I just don’t get it.” “It’s a long story.” “We’ve got time.” Minami and Yurio sayd in unison putting down their instruments and sitting opposite JJ on the other sofa. “Well...” JJ started.
It’s only natural for kids to make fun of and tease each other when they’re young and in elementary school. The boys teased the girls, the girls told the teacher and the teacher scolded the boys, even JJ was one of those boys who teased the girls. Everyone did it and it was harmless fun.
JJ and some of his elementary school friends went to the same middle school and even some of the girls they got along well with too. The girls they got on well with were still teased by their elementary school friends but it was like before, harmless. Other students in class thought it would be funny to do the same to them but took it further than just harmless fun, it turned into bullying. JJ and his friends weren’t sure what to do when it all started, all they did was watch. When two of the girls stopped coming to school because they couldn’t cope, JJ drew the line. The next day when the boys were being nasty, he didn’t just tell them to stop, he actually got into a fight.
When the bullies turned their attention to JJ, his friends were there backing him up, so that he wouldn’t be their next target. When the girls came back to school, the harmless fun teasing didn’t start again until a few weeks later, as JJ and the others wanted them to settle in again. The bullying in class had stopped, not just with the girls but with everyone else too.
Walking to the school cafeteria everyday, helped JJ and his friends help others who may have needed it. Now and then they would see their upperclassmen bully their classmates or even students younger, and they would get into fights to stop them. JJ would always take the blame so his friends didn’t have to suffer. Week after week he would be sent to the principals office by teachers who caught him fighting with other students, seeing as he always started it.
“The guy never actually punished me for doing what I did though.” JJ told them. “Why not?” The other band were gathered around him. “Because the teachers’ job was to help students and not let them be bullied and yet the broke up the fight instead of asking what actually happened. The principal couldn’t always look out for the kids, so he sayd he wouldn’t punish me and my friends for helping others.”
After beating some sense into all the main bullies in school with his friend, it didn’t matter if younger or older, people just started calling JJ ‘Daddy J’, as he was the “leader” of the group and seemed like a father sticking up for his kids. The name just ended up sticking with him until the end of middle school and even followed him into high school. People think he’s a bully and many fear him and his friends, but what they don’t know, is why he does what he does and why JJ is actually called ‘Daddy J’.
Guang Hong and Yurio
Guang Hong was notorious for coming up with stupid ideas and trying to see them through.
He and Yurio had been friends since they were 5. They met for the first time when their parents introduced them as neighbors. At the beginning it was hard for Yurio seeing as Guang Hong kept forcing him to take part in his plans, schemes and experiments.
After a while though, when they got to know each other better and Yurio actually started to relax and take all of Guang Hong’s ideas with a pinch of salt, their bond of friendship became deeper as Yurio knew how to deal with and how to have fun when playing with Guang Hong.
Minami
Playing the guitar or hearing someone play had always been something he had loved. His love for it began when his cousin came round to his house to play for him, as his cousin had just started learning how to play and seeing as he needed to practice, he would always play what he had learned that day to Minami. When Minami was old enough to hold a guitar himself, he too started learning how to play.
For years and years he had been taking lessons, not to become a famous musician or to play for someone in particular, it was just so he could hear himself play a guitar and hum to the music. When the school was refurbished and the music room had moved to a different location in the school, he asked the principal for permission to play on a school guitar during lunch break or after school.
Just like Guang Hong had sayd to Yurio, it wasn’t common knowledge that Minami played, because he only played for himself and no one else. Now and then during lunch break one or two people would sit in the old music room, study and listen to him play, because the way he played calmed the mind. Guang Hong would always stand outside the old music room and listen to him play, seeing as he was too nervous to actually sit there, watch and listen to him play.
