The Forest I’m Lost In

I found myself lost in a mossy forest

Greenery draping the floors

And something drip dripping next to my ear

A weird silence accompanied that drip

And the beauty that I see

Is only an illusion

Or was that first real?

The lines of the bark wavered

And the leaves shuffled unnaturally

A dark haze drifted in and out

I think I can’t tell if I can see the details

What is that root around my ankle?

I can still walk around

But the root follows me

That carpet on the ground was damp

And the smell in the air was so strong

I could only take shallow breaths

So the smell couldn’t get to me

But I inhaled too deep

And my fists clenched hard

I hate the bark and I hate the moss

I hate the vines and I hate the leaves

The dark haze drifted in again

Leaving nothingness but that smell

Will I suffocate here?

Or will the haze drift back away?

And then it did

But I knew it would come back sometime soon

Because the root never let me go.
