Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel were siblings who loved each other very much. They had been inseparable since their birth, and were very close with each other. They both came from a reasonably well-off family, and didn’t have any troubles with money. Their father and step-mother both loved them very much.

Every summer, when school was out, the four of them would head back to their native country, . They had a beautiful wood cabin in the countryside next to a stunning lake and forest. Ever since they were kids, Hansel and Gretel used to play in the lake and forest. They would go exploring into the forest, finding new animals, climbing up trees, picking pinecones, or chasing each other around the bushes. They would also go swimming in the fresh, cold water of the clear lake to cool off in the summer heat. This was their favorite vacation spot.

Hansel and Gretel arrived in their cabin with much enthusiasm that day. They were ready to enjoy their summer in this beautiful place, and have lots of fun! Little did they know the danger they would later face.

A few weeks ed, and everyone was having the time of their life. The brother and sister duo played outside every day, and would only come home when it was dark.

One day, little Hansel and Gretel overheard their parents talking about something. It seemed they were talking about some psycho woman who had escaped the mental asylum in the city, and was last spotted in one of the neighboring villages close to their cabin. The siblings didn’t take much notice of it, and kids, being kids, went back into their world full of kid stuff. (Yes, I really just wrote that sentence)

They spent the afternoon in the forest, chasing squirrels, running away from angry squirrels, picking some pinecones and pretty flowers, climbing trees, and several games of tag. The siblings were so invested in their little game, that they didn’t notice the trees getting thicker, or the daylight slowly vanishing.Soon, it was dark, and evening fell, and their stomachs started grumbling. They tried to find their way back, but every tree at this point looked exactly the same. They looked around, for anything, a sign, or a clue on how to get back, but there was nothing. That’s when the horrible truth dawned on the young children. They were hopelessly lost. This forest was huge, and they could be lost for days, never finding their way out. They panicked, and ran around for awhile before tiring themselves out and sitting on a boulder.

They walked on for half the night before taking refuge in a tree for some time.  The night cleared away, and daylight streamed through, and the children were able to see better. Over a few treetops, they spotted the tip of a roof. It was a house! Thinking they could call for help there, the children raced to the house. It was a few miles away, and when they finally reached it, they were both panting hard. They tried knocking on the door, but no one answered it. They were just about to lose hope when they heard the sound of footsteps right behind them. They both spun around to see an older woman standing there.

She looked like she was in her late 30s, her black hair graying in a few places.  Her nose was long and crooked, and her eyes were death black. She had an unreadable expression on her face, and was carrying something in a basket.

“Well hello dears. Who are you?” she asked in a shrill and scratchy voice.

Gretel whimpered and hid behind Hansel. Noticing this, the woman laughed out “Oh, you don’t need to be afraid of me. I’m not going to hurt you”.

Finally figuring that this woman might be able to help them, Hansel summoned all the courage he had and spoke in a calm and clear voice “We’re lost, madam. We live in a cabin near the woods, but got lost while playing. We haven’t seen anyone since yesterday, and when we saw your house, we thought you could help us. Do you have a phone we could borrow to call our parents?

The woman looked at them with sympathy. “Aw you poor darlings. Look at how much you’ve been through. I can’t just let you leave like this, come inside, eat and rest for a while, then I will take you to your parents myself.”

The siblings were exhausted and starving from their time in the woods, so they agreed without hesitation. They gave the woman their parents’ numbers and the woman took them inside, fed them something that tasted a lot like cooked meat, and showed them into a room with two spare beds. As soon as their heads hit their pillow, the siblings both fell sound asleep.

Around midnight, judging by the darkness outside, Hansel woke up to a series of sounds. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and slowly tip-toed his way to the source of the noise. He slowly watched, hidden behind a wall, as the woman chopped up something that looked like a bloody piece of meat. She was humming a happy tune to herself, a creepy smile on her face as she brought her knife down with so much force that the blood from the meat splashed against her face. To Hansel’s horror, she slowly licked the blood off her lips, her smile growing even wider. She then brought what looked like a human heart to her mouth and hungrily devoured it, the terrifying smile on her face never wavering.

Close to throwing up, Hansel managed to make his way back to the room as quickly and quietly as he could. He sat there for a few minutes, taking in everything he just saw. He knew right then and there that he had to escape from this place. He quietly nudged Gretel awake. She groggily moaned and responded “Hansel, what’s going on?”

“Gretel, wake up. We have to get out of this place right now.”

Gretel sat up straighter and looked at him, all the sleep gone from her eyes. “What do you mean? Have Mom and Dad come to pick us up?” she exclaimed and stood up, a happy smile on her face.

“No no.Stop.” Hansel hushed her. He recounted what he saw to Gretel, and watched her eyes slowly widen in horror.

“What should we do now? We can’t stay here, but we can’t just head out to the woods in the middle of the night.” Gretel asked, chewing her nail.

“You’re right, but I honestly think we’ll be safer in the woods rather than in this house. It’s the best option we’ve got.” Hansel replied, a determined look set on his face.

And so, the two siblings very quietly snuck out of the window. They quietly tip-toed away from the house, and when they were sure that the woman couldn’t hear them, they broke into a sprint. They kept running for a while, until they couldn’t go on.They stopped to rest for a while, and catch their breath.

Just when they were convinced that the woman couldn’t find them, they heard rustling coming from the bushes behind them. It sounded like someone was stomping their way on leaves and twigs through the bushes. Both of their breaths hitched in their throats as they stared wide-eyed at the bushes.

The rustling grew more intense, more violent, and then abruptly, it stopped. It was so quiet, not a single thing moving, that you could the thundering hearts of the poor children.

Then suddenly, a figure jumped out from the bushes. It’s hair was wildly sticking out, and it was matted with sweat and what suspiciously looked like blood. Her eyes had a deranged look, and her face held a manic expression, with a disturbing grin. It was the psycho woman. She had found them.

The two petrified children backed away as she came closer, her grin spreading even wider.“Now, now. Did you think you could escape that easily? You’re not going anywhere. After all, it is rude to leave without saying goodbye.” She said, looming over them.

“P….Please let us g..go” Hansel stammered out, his entire body shaking. Even though he was terrified, he still stood before Gretel, shielding her from the maniac.

“Now why would I do that? I wouldn’t get to taste any of that delicious, juicy flesh, would I?” she asked, eyeing them up and down, sizing them up.

No matter how much they begged and pleaded, the psycho woman wouldn’t let them go. The poor children tried to run away from her again, but this time neither of them got very far. She chased them down and murdered them in cold blood, enjoying every minute of their anguish and painful demise.

To this day,no one except you, me, and the psycho woman know what happened to the unfortunate siblings. Their disappearance remains a mystery to all, and after a year or two, most have forgotten their woeful tale. But you and I know what really happened, don’t we? A word of advice: if you’re ever going into the woods, make sure to leave pebbles marking your path, or else you might end up like poor Hansel and Gretel.
