Welcome to the last SSC monthly challenge of July! It seems like the months have been flying past so fast, huh? A lot of new and fun things are coming for this club, so hopefully that make up for some of the slowness in these past few weeks!

We've got a big event coming up, so buckle in! As mentioned in the announcement post, this'll be our last challenge for a while, as once August comes around, we'll be taking a break from these monthly challenges so we can fully focus on the event! Don't want to overwhelm you guys :sob: :scream:

to check the updated Wiki Entry for all the new and updated information for this club! I try to update it with the newest information as much as possible, and it's recently been refurbished a bit to help navigate it easier and keep track of extra info!

🥀 PREVIOUS CHALLENGE WINNERS:

Due to some timing issues, not many were able to make it for this challenge, but that's okay! I still really loved the entries I read, which made it really hard to pick the winners :persevere: . But, what must be done must be done, so I'm here to announce the winners, along with an honorable mention!

🥇 FIRST PLACE:

cs2719682

🥈 SECOND PLACE:

freckles

🥉 THIRD PLACE:

Winniea

Congrats on all your creative interpretations for this prompt! And, please give another congrats for our honorable mention! Please read "Red as wine", which was super duper good as well!

That brings us to our newest challenge...are you ready?

:rose: NEW CHALLENGE:

Evil royalty, that's a very common trope seen in movies, TV series, books, and our traditional old fairytales. Partly based in reality, we've heard of spoiled princesses, narcissistic queens, cruel kings, and arrogant princes. Varying on their sliding scale of being just plain annoying to the servants, to being outright tyrannical leaders terrorizing peasants, it's an old-fashioned trope that still never manages to get old, with fresh twists popping up here and there like carefully blooming flowers, planted by caring writers.

But what about another side to them? Let's take this in combination with another trope that's been resurging in media lately: the sympathetic villain. People that, bu all means, have done some very awful things that can't be excused, but you also can't help but feel a little bad for them. For this challenge, I'd like you to write about a person of royalty, with an edge to them that makes your readers feel sorry for them. Could that be tied as to why they don't act as great to others? Or did whatever tragic event that happened made them change and evaluate their decisions? It's up to you to craft this noble and their sad story!

The word minimum is 690 words!

The word maximum is 1,460 words!

If it helps, you can also comment the link to your entry here, or post the link in the SSC Group Chat so I can find it easier! But to include the hashtag in your post!! It makes it much easier to find, thanks!

Also, don't forget to include the word count! 🤗

⚘ PRIZES:

Aside from just bragging rights, you also get some other prizes for participating! EXP is our Amino's overall currency, which can be used to claim cool prizes

:tada: First Place :tada:

50 EXP

:confetti_ball: Second Place :confetti_ball:

25 EXP

:gift: Third Place :gift:

10 EXP

Additionally, as part of a new thing that we will be trying out soon, club will also receive some of our club currency, FPS, as a reward for participating in the challenge! Later, depending on how much FPS you accumulate, you can also get some club-exclusive prizes!

Make sure you are following the basic guidelines, however! Your entry's word count must meet the minimum, at the very least. Your entry must be submitted on time! No reusing old work you previously wrote, cause that's cheating... :expressionless: And absolutely, NO PLAGIARISM! If you are found directly stealing someone else's work word-for-word and ing it off as your own, there will be consequences!

And ! While anyone is free to use this challenge as writing inspiration and participate, ONLY of the Short Stories Club will be able to claim EXP and FPS.

You are free to still apply to our club if you like, with our application link here! Applications will be open until the end of this challenge and will be closed temporarily during August, though you are welcome to participate in our event as a club member or not! Club get extra special prizes and perks though, just saying... :smirk:

Oh bet, thanks!

And yeah, 5k is the general maximum for most short stories, but anything above 1k is still a short story too. I typically go well over 2-3k when I get into it.
