Chapter 4: Recovery Labs (continued)

Monday, I made it through the first two classes.  I got to literature and sat in my seat. Bobby came in with Warren and Steve.  I knew they were coming from the same course so it made sense. Bobby was turning in our project.  I had given him the printouts after we assembled them together in the digital file. I was able to stay in my seat while he moved to Dr. Wolfe’s desk to hand her our completed project.

I avoided looking at Warren and Steve.  Steve actually went up to Dr. Wolfe with a drop class form in front of everyone.  She took it before asking if he was sure about his decision. He said he was. She signed the form then he left the class with a nod to Bobby and Warren as he went out the door.

I kept my head down making sure I looked like I was making notes.  I was actually doodling since she wasn’t doing any instructing yet.  I made it through the class and back to my apartment without dealing with Warren.  I started working on my homework from my three classes which I hadn’t already completed.

The next day was going to be much harder.  I knew it was going to happen. Dr. Baden would be announcing the groups for class and the lab.  I hoped I was getting the girl seated next to me in the classroom. It would be better than being grouped with Warren.  I could not even imagine working with someone I can’t even stand to look at, let alone speak to.

When I walked into the classroom, everyone was standing around the classroom.  Dr. Baden was standing in the middle of the room. He started calling out names while indicating what seat the student needed to be sitting in.  Gradually, he moved through all the students. The last table was obviously left for the last two students, Warren and I. He named us as he moved to the last table.

I moved to the table.  I moved as far away from Warren as I could and still be sitting in at the table.  We went through the class like that. I didn’t talk or look at him for the whole class.  When class was over, Dr. Baden came back to talk to us saying “Is there a problem here?”

“No sir,” we said in unison.

“You two are going to be able to work together?”

Though I didn’t know how we were going to do it, I ed Warren in assuring Dr. Baden we would be professional and work together without issues.  He seemed pleased with that. He left the room as I finished getting my stuff together. I headed to the door to get away from Warren more than anything.  I went to get lunch at a sub sandwich shop. I took my sandwich back to my apartment.

I ate while I worked on my homework.  Devena knocked on the door around seven.  She said Bobby and Warren were finishing up their track practice.  I shrugged my interest in track and field was gone at this point. I knew Bobby was still my friend, but I had no interest in the sport, or any other for that matter.  Bobby ed us later bringing us dinner from a Mexican restaurant close to the campus.

Wednesday started with my creative writing course.  The new assignment we had was to select an event recently in our lives.  Write a paper or story examining the event in the style of a fairy tale or tall tale.  We had to give an accurate description while exaggerating some of the detail. Any persons involved in the story must have their names changed for anonymity.  Before I left the class, I was dreading working on the assignment.

My Art of Poetry class was everyone reading their assignments from the last class.  Our new assignment was to write a poem in the point of view of something having focus on someone else.  One of the girls brought up it sounded like a stalker watching someone. The instructor said that was exactly the point of view we were going for.  However, we are the stalker not the person being stalked. I felt creeped out by the topic, but I knew it was the assignment we had to do. The idea was for us to face uncomfortable topics in our writing.

I got to the literature class early enough to get in my desk before Bobby and Warren.  The class seemed to drag on with the discussion of the first exam, which covered Anglo-Saxon and Middle English Literature including quote identification and analysis, as well anyone who were still having issues getting their project in.  The final day for turning in the project was Friday before the exam. I was actually surprise how many of our classmates had not turned in their projects yet. I was happy the exam would be Friday so I wouldn’t have to feel the awkwardness I had been feeling in my classes with Warren all week.

Back at the hill, I enjoyed a gyro for lunch.  It was a comfort food for me. My mother had loved to cook the food her mother had to expose me to my heritage.  I had learned to keep the ingredients for my favorite foods in stock. I could make a gyro in three minutes flat.  I took the time to check out if I had the ingredients for moussaka. I was low on cinnamon and the courgettes for dolmades.  Making note to stop on the way back from the lab to get the two items as well as some extra lamb because I know myself. I was going to be cooking dinner for Bobby, Devena, and I.

I ended up getting to the lab early.  There was a class in there still so I was standing outside waiting in the hallway to go in. I didn’t realize how early I was till I checked my watch.  I ended up sitting on the floor against the wall waiting. I had been there for about five minutes when Warren came down the hall. I hadn’t noticed him at first, but when I did I started to get up to move to the bathroom.  I knew I had to work with him in the lab, but I didn’t want to want to associate with him more than I had to.

“Cassandra,” Warren said as I finished standing up.  “We need to talk.”

“I have nothing to say to you,” I said pulling my bag onto my shoulder and turning away from him.

I could feel him move closer before he touched my shoulder to stop me.  “Please Cassandra,” he said as his hand held my shoulder. I was afraid to move.  I looked behind me at him. “I want to know what I did for you to hate me so much.”
