The midday sun was seeping down
through the leaves, lighting up the undergrowth that spread throughout the forest. It was a beautiful day, that’s for sure, birds chirping and little woodland creatures scampered about. It had rained earlier that day, so the grass was dewy and the leaves still had raindrops falling from them once in a while. But all in all, it made everything a much more vivid green, it looked more alive than ever.
Footsteps echoed around, the squish of the wet grass beneath their feet noticeable as well. Three girls wandered about, one of them wearing no shoes and happily skipping slightly ahead of the other two.
“Hey, Miriam, where are we going?” The blonde girl asked, picking up speed to catch up with her friend, the other girl doing the same.
“Visiting gramma, don’t you wanna meet her?” Miriam slowed to a stop and turned back, tilting her head to the side slightly, eyes wide in question. “Oh, well, yeah but how far is her house?” The brunette beside her spoke up, she moved to stand close to her sister, the blonde, Rosalina.
Miriam shook her head “you guys are so lazy, you should get out more. It’s not too far, just come on!” She reaches out and grabbed ahold of both Rosalina and Lucinda’s arms, pulling them along the rest of the way.
When the small wooden cottage came into view, Miriam just got even more giddy. She was almost a completely different person when in the woods, just so...happy. She finally let go of her two friends and ran up the couple steps leading up to the door, ringing the doorbell installed beside the oak door.
Moments later, the door opened and an elderly looking woman stood there. Her hair was completely white and tied up in a bun at the back of her head, she wore a periwinkle apron with a flower print stitched onto the breast pocket.
“Miriam, hello my dear!” She spoke, her voice a bit on the raspy side but very light and melodic. “Gramma, hi” she hugged the woman tightly, her grandma embracing her back before spying the two girls standing behind Miriam on the porch.
“Who are these two young ladies?” Grandma asked when they pulled away from each other.
“They’re my friends, that’s Rosalina and that’s Lucinda” she pointed at the respective person while explaining, Rosalina giving a quiet hello while her sister simply gave a small wave.
After beckoning the three children inside, she sat them down and made them tea and biscuits. They sat at the four-seater dinning table, that happened to be a fitting pastel green, which definitely fit in with the rest of the decor. The place was overall enchanting, it almost looked like the home of an elf or fairy, with vines and flowers climbing up the walls in some areas and lots of color and greenery being a huge part of the aesthetic.
They talked and talked until it was almost nightfall, the sun just starting to set as the three girls exited the cottage.
“Goodbye, gramma, I’ll come back and visit tomorrow. Promise!” Miriam leaned up and kissed her grandmothers cheek, the woman bringing her hand up to it and smiling bashfully.
“Oh, I almost forgot. I have something for you. Wait here a moment” Grandma said and disappeared back into her house, not even a minute later, she returned with a lump of bright red fabric in her arms. “Here, honey” she unfolded it and wrapped it around Miriams shoulders, it was a cape sorta thing that had a hood and a button in the front to attach the two sides and keep it from falling off.
It was soft and very warm though it only went down her her waist, Grandma buttoned the button in the front and flipped the hood up over her granddaughters head. The bright red was a huge contrast with her jet-black hair, it suited her incredibly well.
“There, wear this at nighttime so you don’t freeze, okay?” Her grandmother pecked the fourteen-year-olds forehead and shooed her off. “Now go on before it starts getting dark”
Miriam nodded and thanked her grandma before leaving with her friends, going back down the way they came, just following the dirt path through the woods.
