Marc fiddled with the shell a lot throughout his days. He’d always had a terrible habit of biting his nails, but giving his hands something else to do while he was zoning out helped tremendously. He had gotten home from work, some of his texts to Koko unanswered and figuring it was just a busy day for him. He took a quick shower and by the time he got out, his phone was lit up with a new notification.

   A few texts from Koko.

< Sorry blue, long day behind and ahead :( just saw these

< But I have blue jr. waiting for when Im done!!

< Doesn’t compare to you, but takes the edge off

< If Im not off before you go to sleep-

       < I Love Youuu

       < Gn

Marc smiled giddily, standing in his quiet house next to his bed, hair still dripping cold water down his warm face. A drop landed on his screen, taking him out of the short trance he was in reading the words.

       > i lov u too :)

       > i have sir bear bear here

       > we’re gonna watch a movie

He grabbed the bear from his bed after drying his hair, holding it to his chest as he made his way to the living room and flopped onto the couch. Smokey hopped up and ed him. His phone buzzed as he was scrolling through Netflix.

       < Damn, am I being replaced by a Build-A-Bear?

       > mayb

       < >:O

       < Meanie

       < You eat yet?

       > no not hungry

< Don’t make me come over there

       > sir that is in no way a threat

       < Blueeeee

       > ok ok i’ll make some soup or smth

       > don’t you have a job to do rn mr

< You always take priority, you know that

< I’m the boss around here they won’t tell me to get off my phone

       > u probably should tho

       < Yeah probably

     < Ok ily bye bye

      > bye :)

      > ily too

“What movie should we watch, Sir Bear Bear?” Marc asked, settling back on the couch after making some chicken noodle soup. He looked at the stuffed animal for a moment and then nodded. “Yup, I think that’s a good idea.”

He was completely through his bowl of soup and halfway through ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ when there was a knock on his door. He paused the movie and stood up, stirring Smokey and tugging the shirt he was wearing down. He was wearing shorts underneath it, but the shirt was Koko’s, so it just about covered his thighs. He’d just open the door a crack and ask whoever it was to come again later. Or to leave completely.

“Who is it?” He asked through the door.

“Officer Morgan Arbuckle. I’d like to ask you a few questions.”

He could feel his pulse beating through his brain.

What did the police want with him?

   He hadn’t done anything.

   Yeah.

   He hadn’t done anything.

   It was fine.

He didn’t have any reason to be worried.

He unlocked the door and opened it.

The woman standing on the other side had dark skin and mid-length curly black hair with an undercut, about an inch or so shorter than him. She had her fingers hooked in her belt loops.

“Um… What- what can I help you with, ma’am?” He asked.

“Do you know someone by the name Kokodona Liam Ashburn?”

If it was somehow possible, Marc’s heart started beating even faster.

He nodded shortly. “Y-yes, ma’am, he’s my boyfriend.”

Some look- sympathy, Marc placed- ed over her face. “We may need to have a chat.”

He nervously sat down in front of Morgan, seated just in his living room since he didn’t have a dining room. Two untouched glasses of water sat on the coffee table.

“Ma’am, can I ask what it is you’re- he- Koko- um. What’s… happening?”

“I have a warrant out for his arrest.”

   Arrest?

   Warrant?

“Wh… /what/…?” He gasped, squeezing his hands tightly together in his lap. “On what charges?”

She sighed. “Drug distrubution and murder, mostly. A few counts of petty theft.”

Marc laughed nervously. “No, no, there’s- there’s gotta be some mistake. Koko’s not- he’s a good guy.”

She shuffled around and pulled something out of the small bag she was carrying and put a packaging envelope on the table, waiting patiently.

He stared at it for a long time before reaching out for it.

   He was shaking.

   Photos.

   There were photos inside.

In the first one, he was standing in what looked like a parking garage. A woman was standing in front of him and a boy was kneeling off to the side. In the second photo, the boy was still kneeling but Koko was closer to the woman and had something pressed to her face. In the third, he was kneeling in front of the boy. The woman hadn’t moved.

The fourth was slightly blurry, but the important part of it was clear enough; Koko was swinging a gun towards the woman’s head.

In the fifth, she was on the ground in a pool of blood.

He was wiping his face in what seemed like annoyance in the sixth.

Marc flipped it over to check the date.

“Sorry, Blue. Something from work came up,” Koko murmured, his thumb soothingly brushing Marc’s hand.

   “Where ‘r you going…”

Koko kissed his forehead softly. “I’ll be back before you wake up, don’t worry.”

“But I’m awake now and it’s cold… Just tell them to wait?”

“I’m sorry, Blue, I tried… I promise I’ll be back before you know it. Go back to sleep, okay?”

   Work.

Marc shakily put the photos back into the envelope. There were more. He didn’t want to look. He put the envelope on the table.

He felt like he should be crying right now.

   Why wasn’t he?

   He wasn’t particularly feeling anything.

   Except shock, maybe.

   Betrayal?

   Something.

   Or maybe nothing.

His eyes flicked up to Morgan. “...What?”

“He’s the head of a crime organization here. You could call it a gang, probably.”

“Um… we’ve been together for over a year now… why… why is this just now coming up?” Marc asked numbly.

“I’m somewhat new down at the station. The rest of them have been bought out. But they haven’t gotten to me.”

Marc glanced over at his bear, perched happily on the couch with his vest and tie and sewed on smile. A tear slipped down his cheek. There it was.

“What do I do…?” He whispered.

“An address would be a start,” Morgan said. “Any place you think he might be using as a cover. They have a lot of money- they’ve got to own a business around here.”

He nodded slightly, wiping the lone tear away. “The- the coffee shop on Main. The Daily Grind. I work there. That’s- um- that’s where we met.”

“Thank you.” She pulled out a small slip of paper and wrote something on it, leaving it on the table along with the envelope. “If you think of anything else, please me. And only me.”

She got up to leave, leaving the envelope. He wished she’d take it.

“Wait, what- what am I supposed to /do/?” He asked, looking up at her.

“I’d try to stay nonchalant for now. This man has been in violence his entire life. There’s no telling what he might do if you rub him the wrong way.”

He nodded shortly. Helplessly. “Okay… thank you…”

   She nodded sympathetically and left.

He stared at the envelope until his phone buzzed.

It was a text from Koko. It had a photo.

He was laying in bed, his hair a mess. His pair of smiling eyes looked at the camera from above a stuffed frog wearing a blue shirt.

       < Finally hitting the hay

< Wish you were here with me

Marc sent a heart in return, set his phone on the table, and pulled a cover around himself.

Quiet, confused tears leaked unsteadily from his eyes as he fidgeted with the shell that hung from his neck.

The text formatting is super awkward lol I hope it's not too bad :( In my file Marc's texts are italicized and bolded but the bold feature in Amino is way too obnoxious lmao

I think the formatting went well, I understood it fine. I love the way you used the bears! The perfect way to make the walls come burning down on reality. And the re-use of the text from the previous chapter? Golden.
