An Accident ? (Excerpt)

Scene: Pre-preparation argument

INT. ANASTAUS' OFFICE - AFTERNOON - DAY

Wood ed walls meet polished wooden floors behind full wooden bookshelves. Expensive Indian rugs under different pieces of furniture such as the desk, couch, arm chairs. Marble fireplace cleaned and prepared, but no fire started within.  ANASTAUS is turned with his side to the computer screens on the other side of the desk facing NADIA and KARL who are sitting in comfortable arm chairs across the desk.

ANASTAUS: (Looking up at his daughter)

"Do you really think it is safe to be traveling with the hunters chasing our pack around the world?"

NADIA: (Leaning forward as she stands against the front of the desk)

"Papa, I know the risk, I need to do what I can for the children.  They are each having nightmares."

ANASTAUS:

"And you think taking them on a transcontinental flight into a land where they know no one..."

NADIA:(interrupting him)

"They have family there they need to meet.  It will be good for them to be around children who are their age.  It isn’t like I’m taking them to somewhere we know absolutely no one."

KARL sits in the chair watching NADIA and ANASTAUS.

ANASTAUS: (Almost growls at NADIA)

"And what happens if you are ambushed while traveling?"

NADIA:

"We are taking precautions against that.  Why do you think it is taking us a day to get to the family aeroport outside of Klin?"

ANASTAUS:

"Because you are being stubborn and won't stay put where you are,"

NADIA:  (Exasperated)

"Papa! I've already told you.  The stress here is bad.  I know the risks, but I'm thinking of my children.  They need a break to be children.  They can't stay here cooped up like prisoners.  They are children.  They need to be allowed to play and run around."

ANASTAUS:

"So taking them to strangers is your answer Nadia"

NADIA:  (More exasperated)

"But you are smothering them.  They aren't used to this type of life.  None of us are.  We are creatures of the wild.  Caging us, while seeming necessary right now, is not healthy for those who are too young to understand why."

ANASTAUS:  (Voice raising to a loud, deep growl)

"No one is caged!  This compound has a diameter of six miles at any point.  There is plenty of room for anyone to roam safely here.  You don't need to take off to the world for who knows how long!"

NADIA:  (Fighting the urge to raise her voice.  Her motherly defensive tone clear)

"No Papa, we are visiting family and friends for about a month.  We are going.  You can't stop us.  Please don't make this a struggle.  We need your help to make it as safe as it can be."

KARL leans forward.

ANASTAUS sees the motion of his silent son-in-law.  He looks to KARL.  There seems to be a silent communication between them.

ANASTAUS: (voice normal volume again, but not happy)

"I don't want to be arguing with you, Nadia.  I just want to keep you all safe.  I don't want to lose you all like I lost your mother."

NADIA: (Visibly softening)

"I know Papa.  We need to do this for the children.  We will only be gone a month.  Help us get the security provisions secured so we can travel there and back safely."

FADING OUT: Scene moves back as the three of them start working together on the spoken provisions in calm, friendly voices.
