The Wishing Elf

This is an entry for the Elf I and Elf II challenge for Malik who did the artwork for the challenge and I did the writing for it.

The Story

Many little children often wonder to themselves as they fall asleep on Christmas Eve, will Santa be coming down the chimney tonight? Will he manage to visit each and every house of all the children in the whole world in just one night? The feat seems to be impossible but year after year presents make their way underneath the tree and their stockings get filled with little toys.

Only the residents of the North Pole know the truth. While Santa does visit as many homes as he can, if he tried to visit every single one in every single area every night, he’d never make it in time. In order to fix this a group of twenty five very special elves follow him from area to area and take care of the present distribution in the areas that Santa can not.

One of these twenty five elves was Sven Upatree. He was about medium height by elf standards and performed his work diligently. His magical shoes that were curled at the toes making movement easier for his feet. Sven’s ears were longer than most elves and were always seen sticking down from underneath the green cap that he wore.

Behind him he carried his brown rucksack that held all of the gifts that he was supposed to give out that Christmas Eve. It was an unspoken rule among the elves to always move quickly and quietly. If they didn’t complete their job fast enough they would be late to catch up to Santa’s sleigh and wouldn’t make it to the next area. If the elves weren’t quiet and got spotted by the house residents, then the magic of Santa visiting all of the houses in one night would be ruined forever.

The rule that was spoken about again and again however, was the rule of impartiality. The elves that helped Santa deliver the presents were the only elves that got to be in direct with humans besides the mail elves that gathered the Christmas letters. All of the toy elves stayed busy in the North Pole making toys all day long. So the ones that did get to go to the world of the humans had to remain distant. Their only job was to deliver presents, to go in and out and to not be seen.

It was this very rule that caused the usually dedicated Sven to be in much pain. Her house was next up on his list. The beautiful and sweet Laura Frost. Sven had been delivering her presents since she was a baby and had always enjoyed watching her grow. Even after he delivered her present, Sven would often stand outside her window simply gazing in and wishing.

He wished over anything that he wasn’t an elf. If only he could’ve been born as a little boy then he could’ve been her friend and maybe something more. If only he wasn’t forbidden from ever making with humans. If only he had the chance to speak with her and really get to know her.

But all these ifs were only that, Christmas wishes that weren’t ever allowed to come true. He could only settle for looking in the window and watching for a few precious minutes before he had to move on and deliver the rest of the presents.

Conclusions

Yay! I managed to finish it in time! With a pretty satisfying ending if I do say so myself. Hope you guys enjoyed my little entry and the 25 Days of Titles Event as a whole!
