There's a crack on my ship.

I'm in the middle of a sea, deep and unforgiving, with beasts hellish, famished and waiting. There's a crack in my ship and I'm helplessly watching it being engulfed in a salty, wet tomb.

We don't know where the damage is or how it was dealt. Had it been on our last battle about a week ago we would have long been sunk in waters much shallower and easy to survive. But now the orlop deck is almost completely flooded and we predict by dawn even the crow's nest will be under the waves.

My name is Felicity Jagger or, more accurately, that used to be my name in another place, in another life, when I wasn't who I am today. The world named me, made me who I am today, took my weaknesses and hid them behind the name of Captain Ezra "Mad Dog" Knox.

I am my name, my ship, my men, the legend that surrounds me but I am not myself. I am many things but above all I am a lie. And now I'm watching my world crumble around me because my ship is sinking, my men will soon be gone, left to the mercy of a faceless sea god and the legend I've built will be forgotten, like a nightmare during midday. Even if I survive the lack of food and water and the blazing sun on my head, all I will have left will be my name. A name hollow, fake, bloodstained and loathed.

So I will sit behind my ship's wheel for the last time as my men board their boats and I will sing a farewell song to them and when they're gone from sight, swallowed by the horizon and the black veil of night, I will shout my story to the skies in hopes that I will die feeling real.
