Surprise!

There isn't always a happy ending to every love story. Take Romeo and Juliet for example. Ha, what jokes. Believing in true love and marrying within a day? That's the worst comedy to ever exist.

Anyway, as I was saying, not everything is a happy fairytale. My entire "love life" I suppose you could call it was built around the excitement of the secret and the fear of getting caught.

The world was built around the "perfect family". One child, a mother and father, grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles paired with a well paying job and perfect home to live in. That's what our world revolved around. Here, there was no room for any form of imperfection. I broke that role with my boyfriend, well, I suppose ex boyfriend, Ren.

It was a gloomy day. For once, our perfect little town didn't have any sunshine to brighten everyone's moods. On cloudy days like this, no one smiled or even waved kindly. Days like this were the one moment you could be imperfect and make mistakes.

That's exactly what I did.

My home was near the boarder of my hometown, but I can't the name. On the other side of the boarder, nature took control of everything, covering all of the broken down pieces of ancient automobile parts from the early 2000's to the shattered dreams of flying cars from the 2500's. If you wanted junk, which people didn't, that's where they would go.

On this very day, my parents both had work. As a 17 year old teen with a high GPA and the brain of Einstein, it didn't take me long to by the insane security of the border. Once across, I darted towards the huge maple tree in the centre of the Outskirts.

Barely any animals grazed in the Outskirts. I because I could clearly hear the stream rushing across rocks and the ground. The entirety of it was music to my uncultured ears, and I was at peace.

Then, I heard footsteps and the crunches of leaves. Quickly, I whipped my head in all directions to find the cause of the sound. Before me stood my childhood friend, the amazing Ren that stole my heart.

We sat on the log where we usually did. At the time, neither of us knew about one another' feelings, but they were definitely there. Ren's parents were a part of the law enforcement branch, and he was always super cautious of making the wrong move. As always, the gloom of the clouds brought rebellion into him.

That's when he leaned in and kissed me gently.

I can still feel it vaguely. The moisture from the air around us and the almost minty taste lingered, regardless of how long ago it was. Neither of us knew what was happening, so we jumped back simultaneously. I had looked at Ren with so much shock he must've thought he messed up.

He did the exact opposite.

Before then, people always used to criticize me for not believing in love and comion. "Dale, you need to lighten up. Negative emotions only bring negative results." It seems to me like everything turned out okay at the time. For once, I felt happy and excited to be alive.

The happiness lasted for three whole days.

Another sunny day coated the town in bright yellow hues. Everyone was happy, and everyone was perfect once again. No room for imperfections, right?

Wrong.

I never intended to find myself at Ren's doorstep, staring into his beautiful, unique kaleidoscope eyes. "Do you want to come inside?" Ren asked so nonchalantly. It was as if the neighbours around his grand house weren't starting at the strange scene before them. I knew neither of his parents were home, so there was no worrying thoughts.

I should've stopped him from leading me inside.

Everything in my body screamed stop once the door was closed. We walked into the living room, and Ren suggested watching a movie. I had to agree. Ren was the cutest being alive, and I couldn't tell him no.

Snuggling with him was pure bliss. It was better than anything I could have ever experienced. The way his hand fit perfectly in mine made everything feel alright. Just before the credits were about to begin, the door opened, and something crashed to the floor of his home.

Shrieks had filled the entryway into the living room. Ren jumped up and brushed himself off as if nothing happened. I froze in a daze, unable to do a thing. Yelling and screaming filled the home, and at that moment I knew we needed to leave.

I grabbed Ren's arm and dragged him up the staircase. I knew officials would be on their way because they could sense imperfections like a deer senses hunters. We were the prey now, and we had to flee.

That night was full of panic and sadness, but there was no other option. I couldn't stand the thought of seeing Ren executed for our crime called loving one another. His heart simply completed mine, and I couldn't stop that. No one could.

We ran and ran closer to the centre of the Outskirts. The constellations and stars above us guided the way, and the moon seemed to smile in approval. Eventually, we crashed in a shallow cave near a rushing stream.

When we settled into our makeshift shelter, that was the last time I ever held Ren alive.

As I sit in my chair, strapped to the arm rests with cold, metal cuffs, all I could think about was the gentle kiss he gave me that day on the log. I didn't understand why love was such a crime, but I suppose guys like Ren and myself were not welcome in such a perfect society. Maybe when this is all said and done, I'll meet Ren again in a world where we can be ourselves and live happily.

Truth is, nothing lasts forever. People die, change, get sick, and move on. There is rarely ever a happy ending to any story, and you're hella lucky to get one of those. "I am coming for you Ren. They caught me after months of running for my life. I'm sorry." I whispered into the metal roo. The lights flickered off, and my oxygen supply depleted rapidly. My eyes closed, and I thought of Ren, and suddenly death wasn't as bad as I intentionally feared.
