Greetings WA! Ann/Andy here with Unit 2 of Korean Kafe. Within this unit you will be learning about greetings, possibly some sentence structure, and some other stuff. A more elaborate description of this unit will be listed below. With that being said, let’s get into some Korean!

During this Unit, we will cover:

Basic greetings

Describing yourself

Proper etiquette (this will be more of a cultural lesson rather than language)

Some interesting words

Basic sentence structure

Ways to say “goodbye”

Keep in mind this is just a BASIC idea of what we will be covering during this unit. If I change something, don’t flip a gasket please and thank you?

인사말

First off, you’re probably about to flip out because you have no clue what the word above means. If you read the table of contents, you’ll know that today’s lesson is about Greetings.

now i’m almost positive you know what this means but-

안녕하서요. (an-nyeong-ha-se-yo)

- hello (formal)

안녕. (annyeong)

- hello (informal)

This could be considered as “hi” or “hey” or another informal way of saying “hello”

반갑습니다. (ban-gap-sum-ni-dah)

- Nice to meet you (formal)

어떻게 지내세요? (eo-tteoh-ke- Ji-nae-se-yo)

- How are you? (formal)

Note: I’ve seen different various of “how are you”, and I honestly looked this one up because I’ve always used 잘 지내셨어요? As “how are you?”, so I guess it just depends?

어떻게 지내셨어요? (eo-ttoeh-ke Ji-nae-shuh-sseo-yo)

- How have you been? (formal)

저는 잘 지냈어요. (jeo-neun- Jal-nae-sseo-yo)

- I am fine. (formal)

저는 잘 못 지냈어요. (jeo-neun Jal Mot Ji-nae-sseo-yo)

- I am not fine. (formal)

Note: Don’t forget to use proper punctuation when writing out your sentences! (I sometimes do that when I’m not using more than one sentence or phrase, so I figured that was something I should mention.)

저는 그저 렇게 지냈어요. (jeo-neun Geu-jeo Geu-reo-keh Ji-nae-sseo-yo)

- I am so-so (formal)

산은요? (dang-shin-eun-yo?)

- How about you? (formal)

안녕히 계셨어요? (An-yeong-hee Gae-shuh-sseo-yo?)

- Have you been well? (Pretty much “Are you doing well?” like in English)

네 (nae)

- Yes/Okay (formal)

아니요 (ah-ni-yo)

- No (formal)

저는 바쁘게 지냈어요. (jeo-neun Ba-bbeu-gae Ji-nae-sseo-yo)

- I’ve been busy. (formal)

There are so many different ways to greet someone and it would take forever to list them all, so you’ve just got to do some digging for yourself and learn by listening to natives speak.

Alright! Your homework is extremely simple to complete, I promise. All you’ve got to do is head on over to the public chat or in a private chatroom, and greet someone in Korean. After that, ask them how they are doing, tell them how you are doing, and say goodbye. (For now, use 안녕.) Screenshot and share your small conversation to the [public chat]
