This happens a lot in Mythology. Usually when god’s (*cough* Zeus *cough*) or mythical creatures get it on with a human. They don’t always look entirely human and often have special powers! In addition everyone is bound to a single power, but what’s a good way to combine them? Do you just slap two random powers together and hope it sticks? Well you CAN. But there’s no real fun in that lol. (Plus you’ll probably run into some issues) You want two powers that are compatible. And you can also use this for couples with powers that play off of each other. (Then their children will be godlike lol)
Let’s get started!
Benefits and drawbacks
There is nothing more annoying to me than a hybrid with all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks. Especially if you’re character is the first hybrid of their kind. Just like there are drawbacks to being a human, there are drawbacks to whatever creature that your character is mixed with.
Having mixed species ancestry isn't always great in books. It's rather lonely not fully belonging to the societies of either parent, even if there isn't active discrimination against what you are. However, if one or both sides of the family have some special power or supernatural trait, there may be a bonus to being a half-breed: Power combos that would impossible for any of just one species to have. Marceline from adventure time is a good example of how this works. She’s the daughter of a human and a powerful demon. Her father is immortal and doesn’t age while she is also immortal but does age. She also inherited his soul sucking power which allows them both to obtain the powers of those they absorb if they have any. But that’s all she’s born with. While she was growing up full vampires did exist and she would hunt them and absorb them to obtain their powers. This gave her shapeshifting, healing, flying, and invisibility, but she wasn’t GIVEN any of those powers. She had to kill a vamps for each of those different abilities. But in the story when she tries to take down the head vampire, he comments about how because of the fact she half demon with soul taking powers that she hasn’t paid any price for the abilities she has. So as she kills him, she gets bit, giving her super speed and strength, but now she gets burned in the sunlight and now craves human blood. That’s how you do multiple powers from several creatures without handing them over and making it look like a Mary Sue OC.
If you’re the half breed of a deity, chances are they’re cheating on their spouse. I mean I get gods live forever, but common dude how many kids do you have? This usually means the kid will have the same powers as their god parent and can use pretty much all of their godly equipment like weapons or any mounts they might have. This is kind of the “have your cake and eat it too” route of hybrids because their are rarely any drawbacks to being a deities child. But I feel like lots of ripple would want to experiment of kids like that to see if they could get closer to deities themselves. I mean come on, some crazy deranged scientist would try. And having someone who can use and access all of your powerful stuff seems like a liability, so I feel like some deities would actually kill those half children out of selfishness if they really wanted to.
Scary.
How their body functions
If someone is a hybrid, then they aren’t exactly one of the other. Let pretend we have a human and a dragon born that have a child. Mixing genes that don't normally mix can have unpredictable results. Sometimes good but sometimes bad.
And why are the hybrids always way stronger than the regular ones for no reason? I could understand things like “a vampire and human hybrid being ok in sunlight” or “ a siren/human being able to breath water and air.” But that half vampire kid better have lots of problems with their diet due to them being radical different, and the half siren should have skin problems. Like oh my goodness they’d never be able to find proper moisturizer the poor thing.
Things like Dhampyr’s annoy me so much. (Hybrid between a human and vampire with no weaknesses whatsoever and all the benefits.)And I’ve seen lots of characters on Wattpad that are like: part elf, part werewolf, part demon, part angel, pat etc. and list goes on for like a bunch of different entries.
Don’t do it. Please. It’s just... silly to have like five types of species for one character.
Now not all hybrids are just half and half all the time. Creatures like dragon borns and werewolves can look totally human and just transform into their other form a will. Adolescents who fall into this category will probably have issues like holding one for for a long time or reverting back to a form when they don’t want to. Having a tail pop out unexpectedly and knocking stuff off of tables would be a usual concern.
Habits and tendencies
This can go from what they eat to how they sleep.
Let’s say that you’re hybrid mermaid that grows a tail underwater but have legs on land. The fish part of you probably loves baths. You might even put salt in your water because regular old tap water just doesn’t taste the same as the home sweet ocean. If your hybrid is living among humans, then they’ll probably see the hybrid child as rather odd. Not sure why they seem to love water but refuse to get in a pool in front of other people. All that seafood can’t possibly be good to eat every single day. And that chocked they always wear? You swear you saw some gills under there. Take the time to think about habits those creatures have and how they would apply to a more human character in their everyday lives.
Also fun fact! Here’s a bomb I’ve been waiting to drop on the writing masses for such a long time. You know that alpha male trope in werewolf stories? Yeah it’s not real. The person who published the research disproved it himself and it’s just a misinformed trope now. I’m serious though, if you look it up it’s there. The quote on quote ”alpha” is the oldest and usually parents watching over their children. But all this shows is that you’ve gotta do you’re research! Hybrids of animals and stuff are super cool, but not as much if you’re info isn’t right. So be sure to-
